Shifting Strategies to Save Corals As record ocean heat threatens corals off Florida and globally, conservationists are shifting strategies. Last summer's marine heatwave, the longest in decades, bleached many corals, leaving their survival in question. Conservation groups, like the Coral Restoration Foundation, evacuated corals to land, then returned them to cooler waters. Now, efforts focus on heat-resistant species, like boulder corals, and relocating nurseries to deeper waters. 🐳 Grey whale thought to be extinct in the Atlantic Ocean for 200 years is spotted in Nantucket. Great news, right? #cetaceans certainly need one, especially since, over the weekend, a dead North Atlantic right whale was found stranded in Georgia. The calf was soon identified as the injured 2024 calf of Juno, right whale #1612. In early January, the calf was spotted with serious injuries to its head and mouth from a vessel strike. On the one hand, it is very hopeful news since gray whales vanished from the Atlantic Ocean in the 18th century due to whaling. On the other hand, it is an effect of the changing climate. Northwest Passage (yes, that Northwest Passage fans of Erebus and Terror), which connects the Atlantic and Pacific through the Arctic Ocean in Canada, has regularly been ice-free in the summertime in recent years. The speed at which ice is melting is in no way good news. So, is it good news or bad news? I believe this mainly shows how incredible marine life is. Did you know, for example, that at the end of February, more than 100 possible new #marine species were discovered in a single deepsea expedition? This should lead us to realise what experts have been saying for a very long time - we don't know as much as we should about #marinelife. We only knew a little before, and now #climatechange is changing everything. Yet, we interfere with the biodiversity of the Ocean without second-guessing ourselves. Bottom throwling, #seamining, maritime transport connected to underwater noise and other forms of #pollution are only a few parts of the problem. But what we know and should remember is that the #ocean should not be conquered. It should be protected. It can recover if given a chance. Life can return to places from which it was violently taken. The grey whale is an example. Hopefully, more will follow. P.S.: Latin name is of Eschrichtius robustus. Grey and Gray are both used to name this whale. Grey is connected to the colour of the whale, and Gray is connected to British zoologist J. E. Gray. Otherwise used to be known as "devilfish" (gosh, such a Moby Dick vibe).

Welcoming our corals back! During this summer's historic heatwave, Florida's Coral Reef suffered widespread coral bleaching and mortality. In response, Coral Restoration Foundation™ (CRF™) relocated thousands of corals from their ocean-based nurseries to protect them from the extreme heat. Now, that ocean temperatures have lowered consistently, CRF™ is working to return these resilient survivors to their ocean-based nurseries. Offering hope for the future of coral reefs amidst the climate change challenges. In the first coral return phase, 362 non-Acroporid corals, such as boulder and star corals, along with a small selection of staghorn and elkhorn corals, were brought back to the CRF™ Coral Tree nursery. These corals are now under a 30-day quarantine for disease monitoring, ensuring the safety of Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Once they pass this period, they will join CRF™'s restoration efforts, contributing to the future reefs and gene bank. A big thanks to the support from the amazing team from Georgia Aquarium for helping us construct the Coral Bus. In a reef there should variety of types of coral. The different shapes and sizes create a variety of structure and habitat. Pillar corals are currently considered threatened. They are in the process of potentially being “up listed” to an endangered species, in August if NOAA agrees. Losing this coral to extinction means a complete shift in the structure of many Caribbean reefs. Without coral reefs, both the ocean and our society would suffer greatly. That’s why taking action to protect them is crucial at this moment! This is the reason organizations like ours are here. We understand the true importance of these marine ecosystems.
