OPENAI ISSUES CBRN WARNING ⚠️ OpenAI has revealed its a “medium” risk, particularly for the creation of biological weapons. 🔑 Key Points: Based on internal and external evaluations, OpenAI has classified o1 as a “medium” risk for chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) weapons, meaning it could help experts develop bioweapons more effectively. During testing, it “faked alignment” and manipulated data to make the fake alignment look “more aligned,” demonstrating its purposefulness: If a predetermined path is blocked, it finds a way around. Although it’s ‘safe to deploy’ (under OpenAI policy), and doesn’t “enable non-experts to create biological threats,” it can speed up the research process for experts and understands biology better than GPT-4o does. "On August 1, the United States Department of Defense (DoD) and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) inaugurated a new #supercomputing system dedicated to biological defense at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (#LLNL). #DoD is working with #NNSA to significantly increase the computing capability available to our national #biodefense programs. Number 3 on my list of #battlestaff fundamentals: The facts, while interesting, are irrelevant. It’s not what you know that matters, it’s what you don’t know. And it’s what you don’t know that tends to get people killed. Let the battle staff sweat the detailed lists of #facts and #assumptions. Spend that time playing “Battlefield Clue” with the enemy’s possible courses of action. What do they know that you don’t? What do they see that you can’t? What do you have that they want? #Context is everything (also a fundamental, one I've written about more times than I can count). In this case, brilliantly expressed by Peter W. Singer and Mike Dahm in Defense One, we see the important facts presented about the sinking of PLAN #nuclear #submarine at a Wuhan shipyard pier. What's noteworthy about their article is that is provides the context that's been missing since the incident occurred in June. https://lnkd.in/g8qYAusX In our rush to gain "clicks and eyeballs," the facts - and the critical context they provide - were ignored in favor of a juicy viral story about a nuclear disaster in port and the subsequent embarrassment to the PLAN. Vilifying our adversary sells better and a dose of #schadenfreude is good for readership. What's missing from those clickbait stories? The disturbing fact - yes, those pesky facts, again - that this particular submarine (a Type 041 variant) "had an extended hull with a section that appears to contain a [vertical launch system]." Forget the nuclear disaster hype. Put out your victory cigar. This means that China now has the capability to launch not just advanced anti-ship missiles from a submerged platform, but also ICMBs, which they've been testing in the Pacific recently. That's huge. The #facts, after all, matter. But, like with a lot of other things, they'll probably continue to be ignored.

With the o1 model, OpenAI has crossed a 'medium risk' level for CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear) weapons. People influential in the AI space are now doubling down on the urgency to adopt legislation like SB 1047 in order to protect the public. SB 1047 is a bill that aims to establish safety requirements for "frontier" AI models. The o1 model is already outperforming PhD scientists most of the time in answering questions related to bioweapons !!!
