We are so grateful to Bank of America for investing in our STEM to STERN Careers Program through a generous grant received this summer. Through the bank’s recent investment and partnership in Nauticus, the generous grant will be used to enroll over 200 fourth grade students in Norfolk Public Schools into a unique three-part field trip / instructor led program aimed at introducing students to the maritime industry this fall. I recommend watching this video that challenges the traditional emphasis on degrees from Tier 1 and Tier 2 colleges in the hiring process! Rather than prioritising degrees as the primary criteria for selection, why not place greater emphasis on relevant skills and practical experience? Focusing on what candidates can actually do and how their experiences align with the job requirements could lead to more effective and inclusive hiring practices! would love to hear others' perspective on the topic...
Kamala Harris, possibly the next President of United States says “For far too long has our nation encouraged only one path to success - a four year college degree. Our nation needs to recognise other additional paths - such as apprenticeship and technical programs. So, as President, I will get rid of the unnecessary degree requirements for federal jobs to increase jobs for folks without a four-year degree… understanding that requiring a four year degree does not necessarily talk of one’s Skills. And I will challenge the private sector to do the same”. This deserves a serious debate..

Amazing sharing. I wish our politicians and bureaucrats also rise to the occasion and really focus on skills, vocational training (amalgamated into the degree system ) and more skill based universities. Every day when I counsel students they say- Can I have more practical education rather than theoretical? But alas even top universities in the capital city are dishing out courses in old format and little has changed in terms of courses or course delivery. A ray of light - some new age universities are challenging the paradigm and offering more project based and interdisciplinary education (the challenge is they are very expensive) Moreover the number of seats across the public and private universities (the good ones) are limited and hence become very difficult to crack. Time to think and rethink and look at new paradigms.

Kamala’s stance, seemingly promoting a culture that prioritizes #employment over #education, raises significant concerns regarding its long-term implications for workforce quality and service delivery. While it is true that certain degrees or qualifications may not always directly align with specific job profiles, the absence of higher education invariably compromises efficiency, effectiveness, and the overall standard of professional output. Federal jobs, in particular, require a level of intellectual rigor and analytical depth that cannot be dismissed, as tasks such as policy formulation demand extensive critical thinking and resilience—qualities cultivated through higher education. Moreover, higher education fosters a distinct set of values and character traits that are essential for balancing professional and personal responsibilities. As a presidential candidate, it is disconcerting to see Kamala suggest or even encourage the private sector to disregard the pursuit of top talent. While referencing Elon Musk's critique of college degrees, her policy proposals appear to lack coherence and vision, veering toward a dangerously simplistic approach. May God save #America from such misguided leadership.

While higher education undoubtedly offers significant benefits, including expanded career opportunities and personal growth, it's essential to acknowledge that alternative paths, such as vocational training and apprenticeships, can also lead to fulfilling and lucrative careers. Mike Rowe's perspective on the rising costs of a four-year degree is certainly thought-provoking. Watch at the link below. https://lnkd.in/e7FkA2_e
