July 1953 at the old #SouthBoston Naval Annex, part of the #Boston Navy Yard, facing northwest. The photo shows fifteen aircraft carriers from the #USNavy Atlantic Reserve Fleet, with USS Leyte in the foreground, shortly before she was converted to an antisubmarine carrier. The other fourteen are small escort carriers built on modified cargo ship hulls. Most of the ships in the picture were less than ten years old, but the pace of technological change, the rapid transition to jet aircraft after WW2 and the dawn of the missile age meant that these ships were now thoroughly obsolete for their original purpose. Nevertheless, due to the Cold War, many of these ships were kept in reserve until the late 1950s. The Boston Navy Yard was established in 1801, mostly in #Charlestown. The South Boston Naval Annex was created in 1920. Boston Navy Yard as a whole closed in 1974, most of the dock space filled in, and converted to mostly warehousing space on several new streets including Seafood Way. Dry Dock No. 3 is still one of the largest drydocks on the east coast. #history #technology #engineering

DID YOU KNOW?💡 Dobbie's legacy in the Defence sector dates back to WWII, supplying specialised deck equipment for the U.S. Navy in Perth. After contributing to the Royal Australian Navy, we re-engaged in 2017, now actively participating in the government's push for sovereign manufacturing. From valves and pump componentry to deck furniture and vehicle brackets, we're proud to support Surface Ship Programs like ANZAC & Hunter Class Frigates, Sub-surface Ship Programs, and Land Forces Programs🚢🔧 #DobbieLegacy #DefenceHistory #SovereignManufacturing #WarTimeSupplier #MilitaryHeritage #InnovationInDefence #ANZACFrigates #HunterClassFrigates #SubsurfaceShipPrograms #LandForcesPrograms #DefenceIndustryInsights #DidYouKnow #DefenceManufacturing #PerthHistory #WWIISupplier #NavalInnovation

Be careful when you invest into the future to not invest into the past: In the early 1800s, the Swedish navy planted 300000 trees to make sure they would have enough trees for building ships later. However, by the time the trees matured, they were no longer needed as new warships were made of metal. Can you give a more recent example?

Navy Needs $$$ and Leadership Congress has complicated budgeting, but the White House and the Secretary of Defense have been less than supportive either in growing the Navy. The call for 3-5% above inflation growth in Navy’s budget is not a new call and a minimum to consider. Clearer goals are needed beyond a fleet of 381 warships sometime next decade. What is realistic before 2027? What will it take? Who is responsible for achieving that goal? The recent Chief of Naval Operations Navigation Plan is good, but without more forceful leadership little will change, and Navy’s fleet will continue the decades running slow slip into irrelevance. https://lnkd.in/eaEBW_FE

1 year at Cameron-Brooks, Inc. Thankful for the entire team here (and all my other mentors)! 10 lessons I learned in Year 1 of Biz (Written to myself): 1. The transition was hard. Harder than you thought it would be, but so rewarding. You did it. You laid the foundation of your career brick by brick, with the help of so many others. 2. Mentors can make the difference. You have that all around you, organic and inorganic to the organization. Joel Junker, and Pete Van Epps: Thank you. 3. You will feel an itch. You will feel The Dip. In fact, you already have. The honeymoon wore off quickly. Work is work, so remember why you joined this organization. 4. It takes time. Don’t expect to be an expert right away. You will learn more in your first year, and in the first 5 years of your career, if you let it. 5. Embrace the Growth Mindset. Pound a stake in the ground right now. Commit to the mindset that you will never arrive. There’s so much you don’t know. 6. Add value where you can. Little things add up to the big things! 7. The sharpest, brightest, most intellectual, wise, and humble leaders you’ve met, listened to, and spoken to, have at least one thing (if not many) in common: They are READERS! 8. Be intellectually curious. LEARN 9. “Big Ears, Big Eyes, Itty Bitty Mouth”. 10. You are standing on the shoulders of giants. Your individual success is built upon the knowledge, achievements, and innovations of those who have gone before you. Those ahead of you have already done more for you than you realize. 11. Remember, working is important. Work can be – AND IS – a vehicle for things more important.
