How Embry‑Riddle’s Online Bachelor of Science in Pilot Operations Makes the Aviation World ‘Your Oyster.' Associate Professor Dave Hunt, the BS in Pilot Operations Program Coordinator, says that “pilots can potentially transfer up to 45 credits from their current ratings and certificates toward their degree and be approximately a third of the way done before even starting the program. To accomplish this online from anywhere in the world is an efficient and effective approach in advancing a pilot's career.” https://lnkd.in/g-w_zjiz #aviation #education #online #worldwide #global

At nearly 65, I’ve been an airline pilot for 36 years. I'm reasonably intelligent but far from a genius, and certainly not receiving job offers from JPL or NASA. Just an average guy who excels at being humble. At 64, I had to learn to fly the most advanced airliner in service, the Airbus A350, after flying the simpler Boeing 767 for the past 25 years. I had never flown an Airbus, which is fundamentally different from a Boeing. I was the oldest person to attempt Delta’s A350 Initial Qualification training program. I was warned that even younger pilots found the training extremely challenging, and that my age might make success unlikely. The A350 is a complex aircraft with a 7000-page training manual, countless training videos, 6 weeks of simulators, and difficult electronic and oral exams. Many doubted I could do it. Nonsense! I went through the training and found it manageable. It was no more challenging than my MD-11 training in 1991 at age 34, despite the A350’s more rigorous program. My learning ability hadn’t declined in 30 years, and I aced the program without trouble. If I can easily learn complex tasks in my mid-60s, so can others. The point is, the ability to learn varies for everyone. Some might peak at 30, 40, or 50, but others remain sharp well into their 90s. Don’t assume or count anyone out based on age. Respect older people because many are just as capable, if not more so, than you. Treat everyone well, especially the elderly, because one day you’ll be one of them, and you’ll appreciate being treated with dignity and respect. Credit to the original owner (respect 🫡).

Thanks to a network of more than 90 flight training partners that span 120 cities, #PurdueGlobal offers prospective pilots the chance to train close to home while earning a degree. “Flight school partners are integral to the flight program,” said Julius Keller, Ph.D., associate head for the Purdue Global School of Aviation. “Students will achieve their private pilot certificates all the way through CFI (certified flight instructor), and those credits will transfer into the Purdue Global program. And during that same time, they’re also taking the online courses.” https://lnkd.in/gvAMV442

A pilot's role is multifaceted, encompassing responsibilities crucial to the safe and efficient operation of aircraft. Their primary task is to navigate and control airplanes or helicopters, ensuring the safety of passengers, cargo, and crew from takeoff to landing. Pilots undergo extensive training and adhere to stringent regulations to maintain high standards of proficiency and safety. At the heart of a pilot's duties is flight management. Before each flight, they conduct thorough pre-flight inspections, reviewing weather conditions, flight plans, and fuel requirements. During the flight, pilots monitor aircraft systems, communicate with air traffic control, and navigate using onboard instruments and visual cues. They must make real-time decisions to adjust routes or procedures in response to weather changes or emergencies, prioritizing passenger safety above all else. Becoming a pilot requires dedication, skill, and a structured path of training and certification. While specific requirements can vary by country and type of aircraft, the journey typically begins with obtaining a private pilot license (PPL). This initial license involves classroom instruction, flight training with certified instructors, and passing written and practical exams. After gaining experience and additional flight hours, aspiring pilots pursue advanced certifications such as commercial pilot licenses (CPL) or airline transport pilot licenses (ATPL). These licenses involve more rigorous training in navigation, flight planning, aerodynamics, and handling emergency situations. Pilots aiming for careers in commercial aviation often obtain multi-engine ratings and type ratings specific to the aircraft they intend to operate. Successful pilots often begin their careers through flight schools, military service, or aviation academies. Many airlines and flight operators also offer cadet programs or sponsorships to help aspiring pilots achieve their goals. Continuous learning and staying updated with advancements in aviation technology and safety protocols are essential for a successful career as a pilot, where competence and professionalism are paramount in ensuring the safety and comfort of everyone onboard. The sky is the limit for my ability to learn! I decided to get my private pilot license last September as an honor to my grandfather but also as an opportunity to learn and grow in an environment that is completely different than anything I have had in the classroom. I learned FAA regulations and rules, aircraft maintenance operations and systems, medical, emergency training, airspace, ATC conversation, physics of flight, weather, and flight planning. Through a 141 Program I had 1 written exam and 4 flight exams which included oral and practical exam methods. So why is this important as I look for my next opportunity? Well - I am capable of learning anything. My undergrad is in Asian Studies and Music, my grad degree is an MBA. I can learn to fly a plane = I can learn anything. The key is having the passion and support to be successful. Other things I learned -- doing new things is scary but rewarding. Not being perfect is okay. You can not control the weather. Your mental health directly impacts your ability to perform admirably. Sometimes success has its own timeline. I still don't like tests. #flygirl #aviator #privatepilot #learningisfun #learnitdoit
