On Wednesday, August 7, representatives from the offices of Senator Collins and Senator King, as well as officials from the U.S. Navy, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, MMA’s Board of Trustees, and the Commissioner of the Maine Department of Labor visited the campus to observe Naval Shipyard Institute training cohorts, discuss issues associated with workforce development, and how the Academy is able to contribute to the U.S. Navy’s goal of hiring 140,000 new employees in the skilled trades over the next 10 years. Today, 51 students successfully completed a six-week intensive training at the Naval Shipyard Institute in welding, machining, and marine electrical. Following the successful completion of the Naval Shipyard Institute training, funded by the U.S. Navy’s Submarine Industrial Base (SIB), students will be eligible for employment at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard maintaining, repairing, and sustaining nuclear-powered warships. According to Naval Shipyard Institute Director, Chris Oelschlegel, “Maine Maritime Academy has the ideal combination of high-quality training facilities and first-rate instructors for the Naval Shipyard Institute program to be successful.” #NavalShipyardInstitute #WorkforceDevelopment #OrbisInc #USNavy #NavalShipyard #SkillsTraining #TradeSkills #StructuralWelding #Machining #MarineElectrical #EmploymentOpportunities #NuclearSubmarines #PortsmouthNavalShipyard #GovernorMills #SenatorCollins #SenatorKing #RepresentativeGolden #MaineDepartmentOfLabor #CareerDevelopment
