"We've talked about other dairy companies, but our real competition is alternatives like plant based proteins." "Customers are talking to us about that - they want dairy as part of their products and value chains but they have to be mindful that to reach their ambitious targets they will have to look at other alternatives to proteins and fats from ruminants because there's a much smaller footprint when it comes from plants or eventually lab grown protein so we have to be mindful of that." This is a fantastic interview with Charlotte Rutherford of Fonterra that covers some of the realities of being a dairy ingredients supplier. Great in-depth coverage of what emissions intesnsity means from a commercial perspective too.

🌍 RTRS at ISEAL Global Sustainability Symposium 🌿 We're thrilled to have participated in the ISEAL Global Sustainability Symposium, where we tackled crucial challenges and priorities in sustainable practices. On June 13, 2024, in Baden, Switzerland, RTRS collaborated with industry leaders to explore innovative sustainability approaches. Luiza Bruscato, our Executive Director, highlighted the importance of going beyond deforestation and introduced RTRS's initiatives for sustainable soy production that surpass EU Deforestation Regulation requirements. Luiza emphasized our commitment to unveiling our upcoming Chain of Custody model EUDR compliance at the General Assembly in November, reinforcing that our standards go beyond EU Deforestation Regulation. She also introduced a groundbreaking pilot project with ISEAL, aimed at promoting regenerative agriculture worldwide and defining its impact on soil health. This initiative aims to enhance biodiversity, carbon credits, and crucial social aspects for sustainable development. While traceability is important, comprehensive solutions are essential. Collaboration remains central to our approach, emphasizing partnerships and data sharing to optimize global sustainability efforts. Luiza Bruscato was joined on the panel by Rajesh Bhuyan, Director of Trustea Sustainable Tea Foundation, Melanie C Grant, Executive Director of Responsible Jewellery Council, Jon Jacoby, CEO of GoodWeave International, and Fabian Waldmeier, CEO of Fairtrade Max Havelaar. 📢For more information visit: https://lnkd.in/dy-yAdRu #Sustainability #ISEAL #RTRS #GlobalSymposium #RegenerativeAgriculture #Roundtable #duediligence ISEAL

Celebrated annually on August 22, World Plant Milk Day was established in 2017 to raise awareness about the environmental and health benefits of choosing plant-based milk alternatives over dairy milk. It encourages people to explore the variety of plant-based options, such as almond, soy, oat and rice milk, which are easier digestible for many people, especially those who are lactose intolerant, and have a lower environmental impact. Ultimately, the day is part of a broader movement aiming to promote a shift towards more sustainable and compassionate food choices. Cow's milk has a significant environmental footprint, primarily due to the methane produced by cows, a potent greenhouse gas. Additionally, dairy farming requires substantial land, water and energy resources, further adding to milk’s high carbon footprint. According to research conducted by Michael Clark et al. published in 2022, producing a liter of dairy milk results in about 3.7 kg of CO2 equivalent emissions. Plant-based milk alternatives, such as almond, oat, soy and rice milk, have a much lower emissions footprint. According to Clark et al., these alternatives emit between 0.45 (oat milk) and 1.44 (rice milk) of CO2 equivalent per liter, making them far more sustainable. By choosing plant-based milks, consumers can significantly reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to climate change mitigation and a smaller environmental impact of food consumption. https://lnkd.in/eFdpdtQu #sustainability #environment #emmissions #milk

🌐 Exciting News in Food Sustainability! 🌱 The FDA, USDA, and EPA have unveiled a national strategy to cut food loss and waste in the U.S. by 50% by 2030. This initiative aims to combat the alarming 100 million tons of organic waste, with food accounting for 66 million tons, ending up in landfills. 📅 Starting December 5, public comments on the draft are open for 30 days. The strategy focuses on four key objectives: 1️⃣ Preventing food loss wherever possible. 2️⃣ Minimizing food waste. 3️⃣ Boosting organic waste recycling rates. 4️⃣ Advocating policies that incentivize waste reduction and organics recycling. 💡 Specific actions include enhancing date labeling, collaborating on food safety advice, and supporting a consumer education campaign. The FDA also plans to leverage digital tracing technologies and promote uniform adoption of updated food donation practices. 🤝 The Biden-Harris administration seeks input from a diverse range of stakeholders to refine the strategy, with implementation scheduled to begin in 2024. #foodsustainability #reducefoodwaste #environmentalaction #usda #fda #foodandbev #sustainability #epa

Juicy News: collaboration of Greencovery, Time-travelling Milkman and Ruitenberg Ingredients B.V. aims for juicier and more sustainable meat alternatives With the growing global population comes an increased demand for protein-rich food, making food security an increasingly urgent concern, as well producing food sustainably. Simultaneously, the European food industry generates over 100 million tons of waste annually. To address these challenges, Gelderland-based companies Greencovery, Time-travelling Milkman, and Ruitenberg Ingredients have joined forces in an innovative two-year project to come to juicy and sustainable meat alternatives. The ingredients for this – functional fibers, proteins, antioxidants and oleosomes – will be extracted with new technologies from plant residual streams. Assisted by SubR Subsidiemanagement, this project received approval for a Gelderland MIT R&D project grant early December. #plantbased #proteintransition #circular #upcycling #ingredients
