Doug Verissimo, Commander, Naval Air Force Atlantic participated in a panel discussion, April 9, at the 2024 Sea-Air-Space Convention to discuss modernizing our efforts to improve and increase warfighter readiness. He addressed the capability of the carrier strike group and the ability to adapt for worldwide operations.   “I am unabashedly a huge fan of the carrier strike group and the capability they bring. My view in generating readiness, and how we generate readiness across the carrier strike group fleet, is that it’s an all-hands, all-team effort. You can really see how that integrated certified force, that gets put together by the fleet commanders, evaluated by the carrier strike groups on either coast for the emerging threat, is developed, expanded, understood, and fed back to those folks who are going out [to deploy] to be the most capable," said Rear Adm. "Hence, if rather than intentionally undermaintaining, then retiring and destroying the Spruances, the Navy had properly maintained them, they would even today be some of the most powerful naval ships in the world, and our Navy’s ASW capabilities would be much greater than they are right now. And by using the Navy’s cooperative engagement capability (CEC), they could have been easily networked with Aegis-class ships such as the Burkes and Ticonderogas, making their large complement of missiles a valuable part of Aegis-directed fleet defense or offense. But they weren’t, and they are now sitting at the bottom of the sea having been destroyed in meaningless SINKEX exercises. And why were they destroyed? They were destroyed because back in 2003, the Navy decided to adopt the most risky option (option 2) for maintaining a viable force structure by destroying the Spruances to make room for ships that had yet to be designed and tested. This decision resulted in over $50 billion being spent on the Littoral Combat Ship and Zumwalt-class destroyer, ships that have yet to deliver even a tiny fraction of the combat power the Spruances would have delivered over the past 20 years. Option one, which would have involved buying new Burkes, while modernizing and upgrading our existing fleets of Spruance-class destroyers, Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigates, and Ticonderoga-class cruisers, would have given us a more powerful Navy today." #usnavy #pentagon #spruance #littoralcombatship #zumwalt #PentagonWaste #MIC

With a "300 Ship Navy" it would allow 100 in operational tasking, 100 in planned maintenance, and 100 in training and certification. Not a lot of margin of error for Surge Operations. During the GWOT we departed from a balanced Forward Deployed Naval Forces model and decommissioned several hulls over time.

Alright, let's talk about the navy's little problem with its littoral combat ships (LCS). 🚢💔 So, here's the tea ☕️: the navy seems to have a love-hate relationship with these ships, and from the looks of it, the hate might be winning. 🤷♂️ But why though? Well, for starters, let's address the elephant in the room: cost overruns. The LCS program has been plagued with budget issues from the get-go, with the projected costs ballooning to nearly double the initial estimates. I mean, come on, who wouldn't be a little salty about that? 💸 And let's not even get started on the whole "modularity" concept, which was supposed to make the ships more adaptable and cost-effective, but ended up causing even more headaches and expenses. It's like a bad breakup that you just can't seem to shake off. 💔 Then there's the issue of effectiveness and dependability. Many critics argue that the LCS lacks the firepower and survivability needed for modern naval warfare. There have been concerns about the ships' vulnerability to enemy attacks and their ability to withstand combat situations. It's like dating someone who looks good on paper, but just can't seem to hold their own in a tough situation. 🤦♂️ But hey, it's not all doom and gloom. There are still some die-hard supporters of the LCS who believe that with the right upgrades and modifications, these ships can still prove their worth. Whether it's addressing cost overruns or beefing up the ships' capabilities, it's going to take some serious effort to mend this relationship. Great to see the picture of the new recruits from the 64th annual St. Louis Cardinals Company. Our 66th St. Louis Cardinals Company will be sworn in at the June 13 St. Louis Cardinals game. The DOD and services also need to review the DOD instruction on permanently disqualifying (PDQ) issues and develop new policies based on modern military medicine and treatment. There is a benefit to recruiting more by reevaluating the DOD PDQ instruction. Additionally, empowering the senior officers in charge of each service’s recruiting command with greater waiver authorities would be a significant step forward.
