12 million tons of flexible packaging hit US shelves in 2019. How much made it back into the loop?♻️ 🤔. I'll give you a hint - you can count the %# with one hand! Flexible packaging: It's convenient, but recycling is tough While we need to scale reusable solutions, we also need technologies to handle what can't be reused. A new Eunomia Research & Consulting / Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) report offers a realistic look at what it'll take to boost recycling numbers. While the path is complex, it's doable with the right focus. Here are a few fascinating key takeaways from the report: 🟢 Over half of today's packaging isn't designed for recycling (even with advanced tech). 🟢 Widespread policy change & investment are needed – even then, we might only capture 13% of usable material right now. 🟢 Collection & sorting could top $800 per ton currently. 🟢 12 million tons of flexible packaging entered the US market in 2019. 🟢 5.6 million tons COULD be recyclable by 2030 if we prioritize packaging redesign. 🟢 4% of flexible packaging was recycled in 2019 – we've got to do better! Change is possible, but it demands systemic shifts in packaging design, collection infrastructure, and technology. Working with Ocean Bottle has made me hyper conscious of the amount of plastic we buy and throw away every day. This statistic, only 4% of flexible plastic packaging is being recycled is shocking. 96% of flexible plastic packaging is sent to landfill or leaks into our oceans. It’s almost impossible to imagine. To help you visualise. Imagine every packet/ punnet of fruit bought around London (think Prêt, Sainsburys, Waitrose), with flexible plastic tops, being discarded into your local town square - only 4% being repurposed annually. As Robert Little says, change is possible but it requires systematic shifts in packaging design, collection infrastructure and technology. #plasticpollution

Innovations in recycled fiber technology ♻️ The increasing consumer demand for recycled materials in textile products has led extensive innovation throughout the industry. The Swiss Textile Machinery Association (Swissmem), Zurich/Switzerland, is spearheading the development of effective solutions to several technical and economic complications that arise while producing yarn and fabric from recycled resources. Despite the complex nature of treating natural fibers like cotton and wool, there has been a significant trend toward mechanically recycled cotton and wool fibers. Companies such as Rieter, Autefa Solutions, Steiger, and Uster Technologies have devised methods to process such materials effectively, with machinery and services optimized to enhance the quality of further recycled fiber processing.
