In light of recent discussions around the behavior of fans at youth sports events, a question arises: What drives the decreasing number of individuals willing to officiate these games? Is it solely the result of unruly fan behavior, or does it delve deeper into issues such as inadequate compensation for the demanding nature of the work? A recent initiative in Minnesota aims to address the problem of misbehavior among fans at youth sports events. This movement highlights a critical question: Are we doing enough to support our referees and officials, who play an essential role in facilitating these sporting experiences? Could it be that the drive to host "high-level" youth sports events is reaching a point of unsustainability, given the current conditions offered to those who officiate these games? Furthermore, this situation begs another important question: Should youth sports organizations start investing more in educating parents and fans, alongside improving conditions for referees? I believe it's time for a shift in how we approach the sustainability and health of youth sports environments. By improving compensation and working conditions for referees and investing in educational programs for fans and parents, we might create a more positive and supportive atmosphere for everyone involved. Dubem Amene, one of our seven Olympians this year at the Make A Play Foundation, has become somewhat of a folk hero at Morgan Stanley for conducting his Super Day interview last year in the back of a University of Michigan-sponsored bus traveling from Ann Arbor, MI to Omaha, NE for the Big Ten Championships.  One year later, he's representing his home country, Nigeria, in the 4x400M at this year's Olympic Games. And in one more month, he'll begin working full-time at Morgan Stanley as a fixed-income analyst under the direction of industry leaders who have become great friends in Dan Lentz and Stephen Dance. The rewarding part about leading MAP is that these extraordinary stories, like Dubem's, have become a defining feature of our organization—stories of our athletes showcasing their superpowers on and off the field, often in ways that defy tradition. Lauren Scruggs has a similar story at Bank of America; Ariana Ramsey, OLY has a similar story at J.P. Morgan...and so on. Yes, those are the types of athletes we have here at MAP—the ones who train for the Olympics AND work at leading companies without negotiating success in either. While most of the world will see our Olympians compete on the grand stage for the first time this week and in the coming weeks, I think of all the sacrifices they had to make to get to this point. I think of Naomi Girma graduating from Stanford with a 3.9 GPA days before she was drafted #1 overall to the San Diego Wave in the 2022 NWSL Draft. I think of Udodi Onwuzurike lamenting over whether he should accept a summer internship at a Fortune 100 company or devote all his energy to competing in the 2023 World Championships in Budapest. I think of Isabella Whittaker and Jade Rose overcoming injury after injury at the 2022 National Championships and the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup to return to doing what they love. So even before the world recognized them as Olympians, they were champions. I could not be more proud as a Founder to wish our seven Olympians good luck and GOOD HEALTH as they embark on this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. However, if the past serves as any indication, they'll probably be back on the grandest stage of them all representing their home countries again in 2028!
