#7 – Courage and Confidence The most effective board directors put their views on the line, confidently saying what they mean, not what others want to hear. They speak up if they don’t understand a topic. They exercise initiative and dare to ask questions that no one else will. Good directors are also comfortable with remaining silent when they don’t have anything further to contribute. I’m excited to share: I’ll be serving as co-administrator on the Senior Executives Association Human Resources Community of Practice! I’m looking forward to adding my voice to this dedicated group of senior executives committed to continuous learning and professional development. “Today, HR leaders are a crucial instrument for unleashing human potential and driving an organization's progress.” Howard Risher made this great observation in his recent article. I agree that leadership in HR goes far beyond administrative support. The role is so much more: to act as strategic partners who help drive success in organizations by nurturing leadership talent and employee well-being. You can read Howard’s article here: https://lnkd.in/ePPS2MuG Join SEA today! CoPs are open to all SEA members who are federal leaders from GS-14 to SES: https://lnkd.in/eiNTiUzX. I am interested to hear others’ thoughts. What innovative approaches have you seen HR leaders take to help drive strategic success in their organizations? #SEA #HumanResources #Leadership #LeadershipDevelopment #KnowledgeSharing

During our Global Meeting in Panama City, we sat down with Renee Arrington, NACD.DC, Vice Chair, Americas of IIC Partners, and President & COO of Pearson Partners International to discuss board search assignments. Renee shared some incredible insights that we will share over the coming weeks. Here is the first question we asked: What do you look for in first-time board candidates? "I look for a couple of things. Firstly, what experience does that candidate have with a board of directors? Do they report to that board? Have they attended and presented at meetings? So, what's their experience base in terms of their current employer's board? Secondly, have they taken the opportunity to gain any board governance certifications? There are many organizations that offer such certifications. For example, the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD) has a certified directorship program. The Private Directors Association and 50/50 Women on Boards also offer board readiness training. Lots of groups provide such training. And then thirdly, do they have any references from CEOs with whom or for whom they've worked over the years that say, "Hey, this candidate really is board ready"?" Thank you, Renee Arrington, NACD.DC, and the team at Pearson Partners International (IIC Partners: Dallas), for participating! #boardsearch #boards #leadership #executivesearch
