The future of Electric Superbike Twente! Recent graduate and former team member Jeroen Koopman, did his BSc Mechanical Engineering thesis on "Optimizing the design of a swingarm using the inertia relief method" based around the Vector-ST superbike. Partnering with us and under the guidance of Celal Soyarslan, Jeroen researched into enhancing the performance and efficiency of a critical motorcycle component accessing the Fraunhofer Innovation Platform for Advanced Manufacturing at the University of Twente Facilities to print the physical end result of the studies. To accomplish this goal, several steps were undertaken. Initially, the pertinent load scenarios were identified, and precise mathematical models were developed to analyse them effectively. Subsequently, an inertia relief simulation was meticulously crafted in ABAQUS to replicate the dynamic on-track conditions experienced by the swingarm. Finally, a series of iterative topology optimisations were conducted, resulting in a remarkably stiff swingarm capable of withstanding the rigors of the race track while shedding nearly 40% of its original weight. At the 2024 Advanced Manufacturing for Defense Conference, #NCAME provided an overview of Auburn University’s additive manufacturing (#AM) program. 💡 TREND TOPIC Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing: The BMW Group is increasingly relying on Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (#WAAM) at its Additive Manufacturing Campus in Oberschleißheim to produce metallic vehicle components and tools. 🏭 The Oberschleißheim location integrates production, research, and training, reflecting the company's experience in additive manufacturing.
