While students who wish to declare a major in the Nebraska College of Business can choose the entrepreneurship and innovation track within the management major, the minor continues to grow among students across campus. From computer science and journalism to biology and emerging media arts, University of Nebraska-Lincoln students are complementing their major with the real-world problem solving skills, competency, resilience and curiosity to confidently pursue their entrepreneurial passions and advance their careers. David Rosowsky has captured one of the root causes of many of US higher ed's challenges: “In chasing one another, and tending toward the same model and mission, colleges and universities are losing their distinctiveness and their ability to serve different audiences effectively.” He explains how institutions are pursuing the same model, their mission statements are indistinguishable from one another, they are organized and function similarly, and they pursue the same ideal, usually hoping for higher rankings. This is occurring while there is a drop in high school graduates and public perception of higher ed is low. There are signals that a handful of institutions recognize the problem with the excessive homogenization he describes so well. New institutions launched over the past decade have typically been distinctive and meet the needs of potential students whose needs are not being met now. Thanks to Keil Dumsch and the Beyond Academics team for inviting me to the BHive debate on the value of a degree. In 2010, I was a co-producer for DGREE.org: The Future of Higher Education, which involved Silicon Valley innovators like Reid Hoffman and JP Rangaswami exploring alternatives to the traditional degree. I subsequently wrote "Unbundling Higher Ed" on Medium, suggesting that these alternatives would expand dramatically. There will always be traditional degrees. Under the right circumstances, a young person who can afford a four-year degree on a traditional college campus can have a great experience, which will give them the launchpad to a great career. But a degree is just one use case for delivering and codifying a learning experience. Excerpt: The Ideology of Competition, Zero to One by Peter Thiel. More than anything else, competition is an ideology—the ideology—that pervades our society and distorts our thinking. We preach competition, internalize its necessity, and enact its commandments; and as a result, we trap ourselves within it—even though the more we compete, the less we gain. This is a simple truth, but we’ve all been trained to ignore it. Our educational system both drives and reflects our obsession with competition. Grades themselves allow precise measurement of each student’s competitiveness; pupils with the highest marks receive status and credentials. We teach every young person the same subjects in mostly the same ways, irrespective of individual talents and preferences. Students who don’t learn best by sitting still at a desk are made to feel somehow inferior, while children who excel on conventional measures like tests and assignments end up defining their identities in terms of this weirdly contrived academic parallel reality. And it gets worse as students ascend to higher levels of the tournament. Elite students climb confidently until they reach a level of competition sufficiently intense to beat their dreams out of them. Higher education is the place where people who had big plans in high school get stuck in fierce rivalries with equally smart peers over conventional careers like management consulting and investment banking. For the privilege of being turned into conformists, students (or their families) pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in skyrocketing tuition that continues to outpace inflation.
