The Ugly Truth: Why 95% of New Software Engineers Fail to Land Their First Job. Confession: I never walked across a stage for a college degree. Never went through a coding bootcamp, either. Yet, in three months, I had 4 interviews before finally getting hired 💻 How? By avoiding the pitfalls I'm about to share. Tired of seeing new software engineers struggle to land their first job, I want to share some insights. Here are 5 reasons why you might be struggling: 1. 😤 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝗯𝗮𝗱 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲: — Job hunting can be soul-crushing, I get it. But letting that frustration seep into your interactions? Big mistake. Remember, you're not just being evaluated on technical merit. Employers are assessing your potential as a long-term team member. Stay positive and maintain a positive outlook throughout the whole process. 2. 🎯 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗷𝗼𝗯𝘀: — Job hunting is a numbers game. I applied to A LOT of positions before landing those 4 interviews. Set a daily application goal. Quality matters, but quantity is crucial for breaking through. You have to cast a wide net! 3. 🏳️ 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗼𝗼 𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗹𝘆: — Did you know only 2-3% of applications in our industry convert to interviews? Do the math, and adjust your expectations accordingly. View each interaction, even rejections, as valuable data points for refining your approach. Persistence is key! 4. 🔊 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳: — In an oversaturated junior market, standing out is non-negotiable. Your technical skills are just the baseline. I highlighted my unique business and marketing-minded approach, and also highlighted my ability to easily get along with others. What's your X-factor? 5. 🤝 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗳𝘁 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀: — While coding proficiency is essential, it's often not the differentiator at the entry-level. Focus on developing and showcasing skills like clear communication, teamwork, and problem-solving methodology. These can set you apart in a sea of technically competent candidates. What Wayne Gretsky can teach you about your software engineer career Wayne Gretsky is a professional hockey player, nicknamed "The Great One". He has some famous quotes that you can apply to your career. But, first, a question for you ... Would you rather get a good coding job right now and have your software career never take off OR struggle for 10 years and then have a great 30+ year software engineer career after that? The question forces you to think. Doesn't a good coding job right now inevitably lead to a great 30+ year software engineer career? Is it OK to put 100% of your planning, effort, thought and skill development into finding a job now and 0% into what you'll need later in your career? Now let me paraphrase Gretsky: "I skate to where the puck will be, not where it is." I'm talking about a "rendezvous", "a date with destiny". Planning and driving towards setting yourself up to have particular skills and being in the right place at a particular point in the sort-of distant future. That's how you establish a durable software engineer career. Getting your first job in software engineering may be the biggest challenge you face when starting your career writing code. Exception is if you start your own company, but that's another story. I've always recommended the following: - Side/pet projects - put on resume. What problem did you have, what did you do to solve it and what did you use, and the result. Reference the public repo. - Social - blog, stream, record your coding adventure. It gives insight into who you are, how you think, and how you communicate. There is also added exposure here. - Open source projects - volunteer, do documentation, fix bug. - Network - user group, meetups, conferences. Get people familiar with seeing your smiling mug. I realize it's tough to handle life and do all of the stuff. But if you are in a large demographic of entry level devs, and one person is doing all the stuff and you're not...well... Anyone else have any advice?

LC/Leetcode won't help your software engineer career Let's take my last two posts, stir them together, throw in a few more ideas and "now we're cooking with gas!" In the "Gretsky" post, I hint that your career is established by having the right skills at the right time "10 years in the future". What might that point look like? What skills might that be? You decide. 1. You might decide that, in the next 10 years, you will master C++ and Unreal Engine and be able to spin out a AAA game all on your own. 2. Or you will master a bunch of tech stacks and be able to create a massively scalable website all on your own. 3. Or you will master AI and be an expert in all the AI libraries, AI techniques and cutting edge AI models. Notice how mastering LC isn't a skill in any of these skill sets? "But," you say, "if I master LC, then I'll get a good coding job and then my job will teach me to code better and, in 10 years, my employer will train me to have one of these skill sets." Uh, sorry to say, that's not what employers do. Employers hire you to get the work done that they need done now. That's their only goal. It's not their goal to plan your career or to be training ground for you. Employers desperately want to hire people with these skill sets. But they don't train these people. (It's takes too long.) If it happens, either these people did it themselves or it's incidental. That's why I posted that "LC is cheating". Practicing LC is wasted time that could have been used to build a real skill set that will give you a durable software engineer career 10 years from now. You risk that, 10 years in the future, you are no better off than today. You are cheating yourself. Alright, I scored a 6 figure software engineering job straight out of college. But man, it wasn't a cakewalk... The tech job market is hyper competitive • Job listings asking for 10 years of experience for "entry-level" roles • Going up against seasoned pros who just got laid off • Getting auto-rejected by computer systems before a human even saw my resume • Applying to jobs that weren't even real - talk about a waste of time! But I didn't quit and kept working on my skills. Here's how I did it: 1. I became a LeetCode pro:  - I practiced coding problems every day like it was my job  - I tackled the toughest problems I could find  - I aimed to solve at least 50 problems each week  - It was hard, but it paid off in interviews 2. I built some seriously cool projects:  - I didn't just make simple apps - I went all out  - I used fancy stuff like machine learning and cloud tech  - I even made YouTube videos about my projects  - This really made my resume stand out 3. I rocked my internship:  - I landed an internship and gave it my all  - I made sure my boss and teammates noticed my hard work  - That internship turned into a full-time job offer  - It's way easier to get hired if they already know you're good 4. I talked to everyone I could:  - I reached out to recruiters on LinkedIn  - I asked friends and family if they knew anyone hiring  - I went to tech meetups and career fairs  - Sometimes, it's all about who you know 5. I got some certifications:  - I focused on skills companies actually want  - I got AWS certified - cloud skills are hot right now  - I skipped the general coding boot camps - they're not as impressive All this hustle paid off - I landed that six-figure job. But here's the thing: Your coding skills are like a superpower. Can't find a job? Make your own. Build an app.  Freelance.  Start a business. How are you handling your job search? What's working? Being a self taught developer or even a bootcamp graduate is cool but it isn't a value add when you are talking to folks, especially when we are discussing getting a job as a developer earlier in your career. Not having a degree is a disadvantage, it isn't an immediate attractant to an employer. I know I am excluded from conversations simply because I am not a degree holder. You shouldn't be saying within the first line of your resume "As A Self Taught Developer", you are already stacking the deck even more against yourself. Lead with value. Show that you have the capabilities to do the job. EASE THEIR HIRING CONCERNS. Don't boast about being self taught like it is worth more than having a degree because it isn't. Boast your accomplishments, your leadership, your skills, etc. That's how you do well in these tougher conversations. EDIT: Many of y'all think this post is on Degrees vs self-taught. It isn't. IT IS on how you present yourself and your skills. You can absolutely have a career in tech without having a degree. Obviously, I think that since I fit that criterion, not starting the conversation with value but immediate disqualifiers is going to set you up poorly. REMEMBER WHERE THE FIRST LINE OF HIRING STARTS, it isn't with software developers where you walk into a technical interview, you are getting screened by HR, a recruiter, a corporate recruiter, etc. THAT'S the first line of hiring. That is the first conversation you need to be thinking about and how you present yourself as such.
