Today we wrap up National Health Center Week with a celebration of children's health. More than 8.8 million children in the United States receive primary care from a Community Health Center, including from a school-based health center (SBHC). We are proud to be part of this, providing medical, dental, and mental health care to students around Puget Sound through our 15 SBHCs during the school year and serving children and their families at our neighborhood clinics. We also work with community partners to share the word about resources available to students and parents during the summer, like free summer meals. #NHCW24 #ValueCHCs #NeighborcareHealth #Neighborcare #Seattle #PugetSound #HealthcareForAll #HealthEquity #CHC #CommunityAction #SeattleNonProfit

Dr. Makin's is research at the University of Aberdeen, delves into the dynamics of family decision-making when it comes to transitioning a loved one into a care home. 🏠 With the UK's aging population, understanding these processes is crucial for ensuring smooth and compassionate transitions for older adults and their families. Planning ahead for care transitions has been proven to greatly benefit both seniors and their carers, offering peace of mind and smoother transitions. On the other hand, without proper plans in place, navigating these transitions can pose significant emotional and practical challenges. 📈 Read Dr. Makin's work here: https://ow.ly/yJmE50RHYQv #ElderlyCare #Research #Family #CareTransitions #ResidentialCare

July is National Make a Difference to Children Month, where we remember the importance of guiding, helping, and supporting children near and far as they grow and navigate life's many challenges. CEC supports and partners with the Partnership for Resilience, an organization that aims to transform and integrate education, healthcare, and community organizations to create a trauma-informed, family-focused system that measurably improves academic, health, and social outcomes for children impacted by Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). Together, we seek to mitigate the impact of childhood trauma and build resiliency by coordinating care and services between healthcare and education organizations, increasing family and community wellness and access to preventative care, and identifying results-based practices that could inform a policy agenda around these issues. I am strongly committed to reforming our child- serving systems to become family well-being systems that address systemic inequalities and outcomes. Family well-being systems include ensuring that children are safe in their homes, schools, and communities. We must pay attention to the growing crises that continue to put children's lives at risk while we re-imagine a better way to support families in need. In Rhode Island, we have experienced an unprecedented number of child fatalities and near fatalities in the last few years. The children's ages are from infant to young adult and the reasons are varied. They include infant safe sleep, substance use, suicide, access to weapons and more. While the needs are growing, the safety net has been fraying. Services, when available, are often fragmented and waitlists are aplenty. The workforce is tired. Many wonderful and well meaning people are working hard to create better systems of care. However, an immediate analysis of the fatalities and near fatalities, and a plan must be developed to address the fragmentation, increase community -based supports and interventions, and stop this heartbreaking and growing trend. #ChildrensRightsareHumanRights. Earlier this week the Rhode Island Coalition for Children and Families, a statewide advocacy group, called on the Governor and the Legislature to convene an interagency, multidisciplinary working group that will be charged with creating a response plan. I look forward to working in partnership with RI leaders to turn this trend around and ensure we are a state where all children and families are safe, supported, and are able to thrive.

Special Needs Planning is more than just saving money or creating a trust. It means building a detailed map of the future for someone who can't do it themselves. But that is getting much more difficult with the crisis bearing down on special needs service providers...
Special Needs Parents/Caregivers - this is a must read. What many of us thought and were told the future would look like regarding service availability and residential solutions is in crisis.

At ConnexHealth, we stand in solidarity with Indigenous communities in honoring the significance of Orange Shirt Day, a day of reflection, reconciliation, and remembrance for the survivors of residential schools and the children who never returned home. The orange shirt symbolizes the stories of those affected by the residential school system, like Phyllis Webstad, whose bright orange shirt was taken from her on her first day at a residential school. It represents the loss of identity, culture, and dignity experienced by thousands of Indigenous children. As healthcare providers, it’s our responsibility to listen, learn, and contribute to the healing journey: Understanding trauma: Indigenous communities carry the intergenerational trauma of residential schools. As we care for our patients, it’s essential to offer trauma-informed, culturally sensitive support. Supporting reconciliation: We acknowledge the ongoing impact of colonialism on Indigenous health and well-being, and we are committed to supporting Indigenous-led healing and healthcare initiatives. Promoting education: Through continued education and dialogue, we aim to foster understanding and contribute to a healthcare system that respects and values Indigenous ways of knowing and healing. Today, we wear orange to recognize that “Every Child Matters” and commit to learning, growing, and standing with Indigenous communities on the path to healing and reconciliation. #EveryChildMatters #OrangeShirtDay #ConnexHealth #TruthAndReconciliation #IndigenousHealing #HealthcareReconciliation

The way we spend our money reflects our values. One of the best things I've seen come out of the National Innovative Communities Conference each year has been the sentiment reflected back to me that decision makers with control over large budgets CHANGED they way they were spending those funds because the conference made them aware of issues they hadn't known about before. This year, I hope attendees in budgetary control positions will learn more about the mental health efforts needed on our school campuses, about the ways we can stem the health workforce shortage, and about how critical community health workers are in building equity in healthcare services outside the traditional clinical setting. Are you joining us this year? I can't wait to see you! #moneyreflectsvalues #budgetpriority #innovativecommunities
