Following the award of the $134 million design and construction contract to Exact Contracting earlier this year, work is now underway on the Manton Dam Return to Service project in the Northern Territory. Built in the 1940s with a storage capacity of 14,000 megalitres, Manton Dam was Darwin’s primary source of water until Darwin River Dam was commissioned in 1972. It was opened to recreation by the Northern Territory Government in the late 1980s and has been maintained since then as a potential future water supply source. Stage 1 of the program, will return Manton Dam to service as an operational drinking water supply source for the Darwin region. The Puget Sound project centred around an 8” pipeline located on Vashon Island, with a critical section running beneath the picturesque Puget Sound, Washington. This area, known for its environmental sensitivity and logistical challenges, required a nuanced approach to ensure success. Environmental Stewardship: Our team faced the daunting task of operating within 200 feet of Puget Sound's pristine shoreline. The utmost care was taken to protect this vibrant ecosystem, ensuring our operations left the environment as we found it. This commitment extended to both the launch and receiver sites, situated near vital community landmarks. Innovative Solutions Amidst Constraints: The project's logistical hurdles were significant. From transporting personnel and equipment via the state-run ferry system to navigating congested worksites near public parks and historical landmarks, every step was meticulously planned. Our equipment, adhering to strict environmental and size regulations, was chosen to meet these unique challenges head-on. Safety was of course paramount, given the project's proximity to public areas and the natural environment. Additionally, the unpredictable tides of Puget Sound required constant monitoring to ensure the timing of our operations was just right. Adapting to Challenges: The project's complexity was heightened by the need to adjust the pipeline's path to accommodate environmental concerns and existing infrastructure. This included adding bends to the pipeline and employing innovative cooling techniques to manage frictional heat, showcasing our team's flexibility and problem-solving prowess. Working closely with the key stakeholders in the project, we came up with solutions to ensure that every aspect of the project aligned with their needs and expectations. The increased capacity will also enable greater water storage during wet months for utilization in drier periods. The project will involve lake dredging to remove debris from the lake bed, reconfiguration of intakes, upgrades to spillways and outlets to improve water flow management, and installation of riprap armouring to prevent erosion.
