The displacement of Black families and businesses not only scatters communities and breaks family connections, it also erases cultural identity, threatens economic livelihood, and tears away the opportunity to build the intergenerational wealth necessary for a down payment on a home. Homeownership plays a critical role in maintaining these vital elements of economic opportunity and prosperity. That's why Black Home Initiative (BHI) is needed— and we need your help! Join us in reaching our goal to create opportunity for 1,500 new low- and moderate-income Black households to own a home in South Seattle, South King County, and North Pierce County within the next five years. To learn how you or your organization can help support this initiative, visit: blackhomeinitiative.org. #bhi #blackhomeinitiative #civiccommons #blackhomebuyers #homeownershipgoals #blackhomeowners

In the United States, homeownership is the predominant pathway to amass wealth. Unfortunately, redlining has historically prevented Black and other people of color from homeownership. What is Redlining? It's a discriminatory practice where financial services are denied or limited in neighborhoods with significant racial and ethnic populations. This systemic barrier has particularly impacted Black American communities, limiting their ability to invest in homeownership and accumulate wealth. In February, the Justice Department and the State of North Carolina announced a $13.5 million settlement with First National Bank of Pennsylvania for alleged redlining practices in predominantly Black and Hispanic neighborhoods in Charlotte and Winston-Salem. How can we combat redlining? Join the conversation; share your thoughts in the comments! Habitat for Humanity New York City and Westchester County is committed to combatting housing injustice, building a more equitable housing system, and closing the racial homeownership gap. In particular, New York’s Black homeownership rate is 34%, lagging significantly behind households of other ethnicities—the homeownership rate for white households being 67%^. A long history of systemic discrimination—from redlining to inequitable access to mortgage credit—persisted into contemporary policy, excluding Black communities and communities of color from the homeownership market. Our mission is daunting, but in partnership with our fellow housing justice champions, not insurmountable. #buildingamoreequitablenewyork #blackhomeownership #housingjustice #housingadvocacy ^ source: “Homeownership Rates in New York”, October 2022, Office of the New York State Comptroller Photo credit: National Archives and Records Administration, Mapping Inequality

Did you know... 65.6% of Americans own their home. That's approximately two thirds of the entire country. Studies have shown that homeowners tend to be more involved in their communities, have higher levels of civic engagement, and report greater overall satisfaction with their lives compared to renters. This could be due to the sense of pride and responsibility that comes with owning a home. #EngelVölkers #evfirstcoast #hoffmanandcrawfordteam #engelvölkersadvisor #licensedbrokerassociate #certifiedresidentialspecialist #graduaterealtorinstitute #militaryrelocationprofessional #militaryrelocation #pcspayitforwardambassador #pcspayitforward® #funfact #homeownershipmonth #newlifetimememories https://lnkd.in/eQY6TSPw

Colin Gordon's "Patchwork Apartheid" offers a compelling and meticulous examination of the historical underpinnings of racial segregation and urban inequality in America, shedding light on the significant role private actors played in shaping discriminatory housing practices. Gordon's analysis not only challenges the conventional narrative that federal policies alone are to blame for segregation but also highlights the deep-rooted and pervasive nature of these practices, which predate and set the stage for federal redlining. By revealing the mechanisms through which restrictions such as racial covenants by private developers were embedded in the urban landscape, Gordon provides a crucial understanding of the origins and persistence of racial disparities in homeownership and wealth. This work is a stark reminder of the long-lasting impact of racial discrimination in housing and the importance of acknowledging and addressing the complex historical factors that contribute to contemporary inequalities. Gordon's research is not only timely but essential for policymakers, scholars, and the public to comprehend the full scope of housing discrimination's legacy and to forge paths towards genuine equity and inclusion in American society. #PatchworkApartheid #HousingDiscrimination #RacialSegregation #UrbanInequality #ColinGordon #HistoricalAnalysis #HomeownershipGap #RacialJustice #EquityInHousing #RealEstateEthics #FairHousingAct #SocialJusticeReading

Minnesotans aged 18-34 are overwhelmingly concerned about their ability to own a house — which isn't surprising considering Realtor.com reports the median home price in the Twin Cities is $369,000, up 8.6% from this time just last year. "A typical young couple, with the housing stock in short supply and interest rates above 7%, would need a staggering $35,000 for a down payment on an average-priced home in a safe neighborhood. This, coupled with a monthly payment of over $2,000, is a financial burden that seems insurmountable." More poll results here: https://lnkd.in/gsTbTwV2
