TIME magazine defines a Closer as a Black leader dedicated to closing the racial wealth gap. Dr. Kelly Burton, PhD , CEO of BIA, embodies that definition. At last week's TIME Closers Impact Dinner, Kelly took to the stage and emphasized the importance of the Closers list, highlighted BIA's achievements, and outlined the ongoing work ahead. “What an honor. I am so, so, so proud. We are so proud at Black Innovation Alliance to serve as a Knowledge Partner for the Closer’s list. It's been an honor to walk alongside the TIME team from the inception of this concept and to see it come to fruition in this room. Founded in 2020, Black Innovation Alliance is a national coalition of organizations dedicated to closing the racial wealth gap through entrepreneurship and ownership. We were formed by a small group of ecosystem leaders, and today, BIA is 175 organizations strong. Yes. And they support over a half million entrepreneurs and innovators of color. In just three years, we've covered a lot of ground. We partnered with Congress to launch the Congressional Caucus on Black Innovation. We've partnered with UBS, the eBay Foundation, and others, some of whom are in this room, to launch the Decade of Black Innovation, launched a partnership with the Bahamas to drive entrepreneurship and innovation in climate tech. We've collaborated with the White House to connect communities of color to opportunities coming out of the federal government, and we've conducted the first ever study on digital entrepreneurship.” - Kelly Burton, PhD Video credit: TIME #BlackInnovationAlliance

In episode 8 of "From Chains to Links," Ifeoma Ike, Esq. dives into the complexities of advancing the Black innovation movement. She challenges us to reimagine how we push forward, recognizing that the path isn't always clear-cut. While many of us are striving to thrive as innovators, creative technologists, and entrepreneurs, there’s a tension between success in the capitalist framework and creating meaningful shifts within our communities. Ifeoma argues that the current systems weren’t designed to support both, and that we shouldn’t shy away from having tough conversations about ethical models and the true impact on the Black GDP. It’s time to rethink how we can innovate and uplift our communities simultaneously. The bonus episode of "From Chains to Links" is now available! Hosts Kelly Burton, PhD and Ifeoma Ike, Esq. share their thoughts on the unique journey of being Black, creative, and entrepreneurial. During the episode, Kelly discusses a profound truth about the Black experience in America: "There's only one group that I know of that was considered property... We were leveraging collateral. People took their slave rolls to the bank and got money. We were the most valuable commodity, more valuable than land at certain points. So, what does it mean to go from being owned to being owners?... And I think we need to consider all of the ways that that experience made us resilient and strong. But has impacted us generationally in ways that might not necessarily be conducive towards our journey forward." This episode challenges people to consider the "whole Black entrepreneur" and the importance of nurturing an environment where innovation thrives—from ideation to failure, repair, and growth. Tune in to explore how we can create supportive networks and circles of opportunity that allow us to live out our dreams. Stream episodes on your preferred podcast platform. What an incredible start to my time at Martha’s Vineyard! The day began with a powerful roundtable, hosted by Black Innovation Alliance, Howard University & PNC National Center for Entrepreneurship, Halcyon, and National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC). We explored the future of Black entrepreneurship and the real strategies needed to drive economic growth. A few key takeaways: 🚀 Moonshot Capital: We must embrace a moonshot approach, channeling substantial capital to create transformative economic growth. Connecting entrepreneurs with both Fortune 500 and middle-market opportunities is crucial for wealth creation and market accessibility for Black-owned firms. 💼 McKinsey & Company Summer Executive Workshop – Black Economic Forum: Key takeaways: Mayoral Leadership: Mayors play a pivotal role in driving equity for Black residents through budgets, programs, and resources. We heard from leaders like Ras J. Baraka, Mayor of Newark, NJ, and Lata Reddy, SVP of Inclusive Solutions at Prudential, on how their partnerships are advancing economic mobility in their cities. ✨ Inspiring Reception Dinner & Keynote: The reception dinner at McKinsey’s Workshop was another highlight, where I was deeply inspired by Black CEOs leading Fortune 500 companies. Despite ongoing DEI efforts, less than 2% of Fortune 500 CEOs are Black in 2024. Hearing from trailblazers like Calvin Butler (Exelon), Toni Townes-Whitley (SAIC), and David Bozeman (C.H. Robinson) on their leadership journeys and their efforts to pave the way for future leaders was incredibly impactful. 🍽️ Kapor Dinner: A special thank you to the Kapor Center for their visionary leadership. Dr. Freada Kapor Klein,Mitch Kapor, Allison Scott, Ph.D. and Lili Gangas are redefining the intersection of tech and democracy, exemplifying the power of collaborative leadership and innovation. And I met the incomparable Gayle King!! 🙌🏾 The swag, the spirit of connectivity, the joy, the brilliance, the power, the can-do spirit—these are just a few of the reasons why Martha’s Vineyard is truly magical!
