If you eat an avocado that’s not quite ripe, you won’t enjoy it. AND, you won’t have a chance to enjoy it tomorrow, when it would have been perfect if you had only waited. If you live your life based on instant gratification and little planning, you’ll either never have a good avocado or you’ll pay more than you should to someone else who planned ahead. Buy more avocados than you think you need, because the hassles are always greater than the cost, so you might as well invest. And since you have so many, share them when they’re ripe. This is me in a bathtub many years ago. Not a regular bath. It’s a bathtub with a story. My uncle was a baker. In those times, he regularly gave us empty buckets. Packaging of bakery ingredients. Practical for all purposes, always useful at our dairy farm. One day he gave us a rectangular blue tub. Soon it was my favorite little bathtub. I remember very well the image on the edge of the bath: a lion in the waves. And a word in capital letters: ZEELANDIA. I had just learned to spell words. It was one of the first words I could read, but I didn’t understand it. Nor did I understand the lion. Now after working 25 years for this company, I do understand the meaning of both. The lion in the waves meaning: ‘ Luctor et Emergo’. Latin for ‘I struggle and emerge’. The motto of the Dutch province of Zeeland. And the story of Zeelandia: for more than 100 years executing a consistent strategy focusing on 3 priorities: 1. The customer. 2. The customer. 3. The customer.
