We Need to Rethink

KUDOS TO ECOWAS It is now obvious that ECOWAS is the most formidable regional blocks in Africa. Its objectives are cut and clear. Its achievements are highly remarkable. Thanks to the Bureaucratic machine of the body. contrary to misunderstanding and misrepresentation, ECOWAS is the only antidote to French imperialism. Liberation of West Africa from French neo colonialism can only be achieved through the instrument of a United and strong body like ECOWAS. Through connecting the region using Eco currency, harmonization of trade tariffs,common market,ease movements of people and goods by building massive network of rail and roads , etc. ECOWAS has been vibrant and proactive towards achieving the foregoing. To achieve all these ; we need peace and stability. The progenitor of stability, ECOWAS,had saved Liberia and Sierra Leone from becoming DR Congo of West Africa. Through the Democracy and Good governance protocol, ECOWAS has safeguard Democracy in Ivory coast and Gambia. The journey towards economic and political integration of West Africa is on course,and the vehicle to realize this ambition is ECOWAS. Coalition of 3 destabilized Sahelean countries that are riddled with political instability and human rights violation is not a threat to ECOWAS. Neither bringing in communists and foreign mercenaries can bamboozled us.

The right move?

In this interview with News Central TV I offered my perspectives on the new development in central Sahel. Generally, 2024 bodes ill for international relations among countries considering the widespread conflict, geopolitical contestations, alignment and non-alignment across regions. The fracturing of ECOWAS by the military authoritarians must also be viewed in this context. The majoritarian ECOWAS led by the President of Nigeria must engage the minority/breakaway Sahel states strategically to find a balanced solution to this extraordinary challenge. As Burkina Faso, Niger and Mali exit ECOWAS, a new social dimension emerges. Unless the leadership of ECOWAS decides on an afrocentric resolution of the issues. Power belongs to the people. The people of these 3 West African countries have thrown their weight behind their military men. Case closed. I said it before: What was required was working with the current leadership towards a new dawn of Western democracy. Nothing short of that would do. However, intangible and selfish considerations have continued to direct the actions of the ECOWAS secretariat . Such that some were and are still preparing for how to topple these regimes. Nigeria would rather suffer economic mishaps rather than open its borders for free trade. Naira is trapped in those countries. Cefa is becoming the currency of trade amongst border town trafficking with the cost of smuggled goods rocketing as the popularity of the military leadership in those countries. Their populism and patriotic rhetorics in handling the economic and security issues in these countries unite the people to a common cause 🙄. It is time to define an African agenda and perspective in the resolution of African disputes. EKD

𝐎𝐧𝐠𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐄𝐥 𝐅𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐫: 𝐀 𝐂𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐬 In our June 2024 Horn of Africa situation update, we turn our focus to #Sudan where recent clashes in El Fasher highlight an escalation in conflict. The SAF and its allied forces are currently engaged in a fierce battle to retain control of El Fasher against the RSF. This conflict has resulted in significant casualties, with #ACLED recording approximately 320 fatalities during the reporting period alone, from 25 May to 21 June 2024. The humanitarian impact is profound, as healthcare facilities are overwhelmed and critical services are disrupted. This battle is distinct from previous conflicts in the Darfur region, driven by the extensive mobilization of the Darfur Joint Forces and Zaghawa ethnic militias. These forces are crucial in supporting the SAF, providing both manpower and strategic advantage, which has been essential in resisting the RSF's advances to El Fasher.
