A global hiring report in the design and build space landed on my desk this morning and the findings are encouraging. Especially about hiring design talent in the Philippines (and Southeast Asia). 🇵🇭✨ Here’s the summary: The Philippines is making waves in the global hiring scene, especially for creative roles. It's not just about the tech anymore; design is taking the spotlight. Why does this matter? Well, it's a big deal because it shows how diverse and rich the talent pool is in the Philippines. Designers there are not just skilled; they bring a fresh, vibrant energy and perspective to projects, something the world is starting to notice and appreciate more and more. And here's the thing – with the world leaning heavily into distributed teams, the barriers are lower than ever. Agencies and consultancies, big and small, are looking at the way they work and are identifying the Philippines as a goldmine of creative, design talent. A long overdue post, but recently I walked out of the office for the last time - forever! And, no, it wasn’t by security…. Although it was hard to leave the great friends and partners, it certainly wasn't hard to leave the machine. It’s been a long and winding creative road. Beginning my design career as an art director in Tokyo; then working at various design agencies and global consultancies; running my own retail design agency (Thanks, Tim!); to finally serving as a design leader at AT&T. And, along the way I’ve taught at many academic institutions and organizations. And now I’m done…kinda! Not quite ready to call it retirement, but no more need or desire to work full time. So what’s next? Well, my grand-daughter thinks it's drinking beer and watching football (Go Dawgs!). Probably, but I’ll also continue with teaching and mentoring new design talent. Mainly I plan on taking a break and catching up… at least for a little bit. So, if I haven’t seen or talked to you in awhile, let’s get together. I got nothing else to do…. There are also a couple of things that I’m interested in. I want to leverage my Japanese language and experience. Build upon my academic and teaching experience. It's fantastic to see the evolution of global teams. A few years ago, hiring overseas was mostly focused on Software Engineers. Today, it's expanded across the entire organization: 🎨 Creative Teams are finding top-notch Graphic Designers, Video Editors, and 3D Animators from every corner of the globe. 📊 Accounting Teams (yep, you read that right) are hiring US GAAP experts worldwide. 💬 Customer Support Teams are expanding into multiple time zones to provide seamless 24-hour service. European salary bandings for product designers in GBP: (For top designers, who lead through their work) Junior (35-45k) Mid (50-65k) Senior (70-85k) Lead (90-110k) Staff/Principal/Manager (110-130k) Product Design Director (140-160k) There are occasions people get paid more usually due to a rare skillset, and being in the right place at the right time. Great Visual/Motion designers often get paid the same as above, equally as valuable. Especially in agencies. I’d add Eastern Europe, is 10-20% less than these salaries usually because cost of living is cheaper. A few things I see work well: - Obvious things such as dual track for IC and Management, paid the same. eg. Principal and Head of is the same banding. - Content Design is paid the SAME as Product Design. Come on, it's 2024. - Don't judge people on their passport, if you're hiring a full remote team, pay people the same. Different for location-based roles.
