It’s clear that what we consider oversharing has changed.
In our digital age, perceptions of oversharing and undersharing vary widely. What one person considers too much information might seem perfectly normal to another. These boundaries between personal and public information are constantly shifting, influenced by cultural differences and evolving practices.
Even well-intentioned gestures, like sharing a sign for a child’s birthday, can come at a cost. Are we compromising a child’s privacy and potentially their safety?
What message are we sending to those around us, including our kids? Are these signs inadvertently teaching them that we seek validation through attention from others?
The crossover between offline and online is significant—many of these lawn signs end up on social media. Whether we admit it or not, it’s often about seeking attention, craving approval, and possibly tying our self-worth to the number of likes and comments we receive.
Adults are caught up in this cycle. Kids aren’t making their own lawn signs or posting about themselves online—parents are. Yet, parents often wonder why their children share personal information with strangers online. Didn’t they learn that at home?
Thanks, Colleen Murphy for this insightful post. 💡

This one celebration sign shows age, location, name, favorite sports, house they sleep in, and the kind of car you drive.
Did I leave anything out about where to find your child?
Is there anything else you would like to advertise to a predator on your child’s birthday this year?
Special thanks to my dear friend for letting me share this photo in an effort to help more families who absolutely mean well, but may not realize the kind of nightmare this could lead too.
