We are excited to announce the launch of the Sakura Deeptech Accelerator, a new program that will be a core part of Sakura Deeptech Shibuya, set to open in January 2025 by Tokyu Land Corporation. This accelerator will support deep tech startups working in fields such as climate tech and AI/robotics. It will foster collaboration in deep tech innovation alongside MIT professors, global VCs, universities, and corporations. Is European Deep Tech at inflection point⁉️ 💯Since 2019, European share of global Deep Tech founding rose from ~10% to ~19% in 2023. Deep Tech funding is becoming a larger part of overall European VC tech funding, having grown from ~10% of regular tech funding in 2010 to 44% in 2023. 📌Europe has great early-stage fundamentals to become Deep Tech hotspot by 2030. R&D expenses compared to US - 0,8x, Science publications compared to US- 1,1x. Europe is home to 40% of the top 10 world-class research institutes, Europe’s universities are 30% of top Computer Science institutions globally. 📣European challenge lies in scaling and exiting!📣 📉~40% of growth capital is from non-European investors, ~60% of top acquirers are non-European corporates, posing a potential threat to Europe’s technological independence. 🔭Compared to US, Europe has ~0,8x tech unicorns per capita, only 0,2x growth investment per capita and ~0,5 IPO value per capita. 💡In my opinion, current state of European Deep Tech almost 1:1 resembles today’s stage of CEE startup scene- big pool of early-stage innovations that face the founding gap at the breakout stage. 🚀 Over the past few months, I've been diving deep into the world of technology, AI, and accelerators - from the Imperial Incubator to AI conferences and exploring how computer science intersects with finance. My latest discovery? 🔬 Deeptech Labs - an accelerator co-founded by Miles Kirby, Ewan Kirk, and key institutions like Arm and Cambridge Innovation Capital. 🤔 What draws me to deep tech? It's more than just technology - it's about pushing boundaries in highly specialized fields that require extensive knowledge. As someone aspiring to start a startup one day, I'm fascinated by how crucial support is for deep tech ventures. After all, this is how Silicon Valley began - with pioneers developing semiconductors and groundbreaking technologies. 💡 🔬 At Deeptech Labs' recent demo day, one startup particularly caught my eye: Sterling Bio Machines. Founded by Akshaya Ahuja and Steve Goldenberg, their novel bioreactors could potentially transform global manufacturing through synthetic biology. It's a perfect example of why I'm passionate about science and technology - these are solutions that require deep expertise and can fundamentally change how we approach complex challenges. 🧬 🌟 The event showcased five other incredible startups, High Temperature Material Systems, HoloMem, Panazee, Silveray, Monumo , working on everything from advanced materials to innovative data storage and biomarker platforms. The Deep Tech Skill Days 2024 was a blast, congrats to EIT Deep Tech Talent, Natalie CERNECKA and team. We had the opportunity at Technoport SA to meet, share and exchange with deep tech professionals about our proposal of #experiential-learning for deep tech entrepreneurship through the #circular-migration of scientific talents and entrepreneurs. We in fact shared about the necessary #tech-diplomacy across EU countries to facilitate the mobility of deep tech entrepreneurs and researchers to the most relevant ecosystem aligned to their domain. The rationale is about triggering the highest impact in deep tech venturing by facilitating the mobility of entrepreneurs in-and-across the most relevant EU ecosystem. We were glad to receive the support of the deep tech professionals about this rationale ; defining effective collaboration models for deep tech talent development ; addressing the #Lab-to-Market challenges with optimal IP management ; facilitated access to #technology-assets for EU startups, SME's and corporate ventures.
