On Wednesday NOPSEMA hosted the National Regulator’s Community of Practice (NRCoP)/ANZSOG - The Australia and New Zealand School of Government event The Hidden Signals: Enhancing Regulatory Oversight through Near-Miss Reporting, giving regulators from a wide variety of industries an insight into best practice when responding to near-miss incidents.
Facilitated by Alice Turnbull, Director - Exploration and Development, the webinar and workshop featured guest speaker Jodi Goodall, Head of Organisational Reliability at consultancy firm Brady Heywood.
Jodi's presentation was attended by regulators from the health, hospitality and mining industries, with more than 250 viewers from around Australia and New Zealand also logging on to watch via Zoom webinar.
The Hidden Signals focused on near-miss reporting from a regulator’s perspective, exploring the challenges regulators face when collecting and using near-miss data.
Jodi's presentation raised key questions such as: How can high-risk industries prevent fatalities and accidents? What causes a near-miss? What are the key learnings industry can take from near-miss incidents? How can industry be encouraged to report near-miss events?
An afternoon workshop gave regulators from different industries a chance to meet, network and discuss their approaches to near-miss reporting.
Jodi used case studies to show how successful risk-based regulators encourage a healthy level of near-miss reporting, make meaning of near-miss data, use it to inform targeted programs and interventions, and nurture industry to learn the lessons near-miss data offers – before a major failure occurs. #nopsema #nrcop #anzsog #nearmissreporting
