A big 'Pro' of being your own boss for me is that no two weeks are ever exactly the same! Recently I've been 'interviewing' some highly skilled business people who are looking to volunteer on the Help to Grow Programme across the UK as well as coordinating the Peer Mentoring Support for Mentors on the programme. It's fantastic how many experienced business owners want to volunteer their time to help others and give even more time to practicing their mentoring skills so they can be the best they can be. Many are already professional mentors and are offering pro bono work for the programme. Others are new to mentoring and are making good use of the great training opportunities. Throughout though, all do it because they also know the cons of running and growing your own business and want to help others avoid the challenges they faced and mistakes they made. Meeting these people makes me even more certain that getting a business mentor on your side is invaluable, whether you get a volunteer or a paid mentor... They want you to succeed! Mentoring is my passion. Mentoring is something we all need at times. Anyone can be a mentor but not everyone should. Mentors don't need qualifications but personality, empathy and mortality are musts. I have a new saying and that's Minimum requirements are not a target they are a platform to spring off of. We have got to keep standards high whilst supporting vulnerable young people. This 'it will do' culture needs addressing. I'm learning so much by talking and absorbing info from trained and experienced professionals and I feel so much more confident in what I'm offering and what I'm doing. #mentorsrock

I attribute my professional success to mentorship, the hard work, determination and potential were all me but I had never realized all of the strong, resilient and kind women that gave me tips here and there were also my mentors. Mentoring is such a fluid idea, someone who cares enough about you to give you support and resources, it can be a set time frame or just listening to a problem and helping connecting you with someone who can help. Women typically feel like we need to do this alone or people will think we are weak, but I feel the most indestructible when I walk into an event/presentation/group/meeting 5 strong women deep! They are my crew, my squad. Having those women allow me to stand on their shoulders is what mentoring is all about. I do not take mentoring lightly, which is why I was floored when I was asked to become a mentor to a room of remarkable women ( and men, we see your support!) in business.
