For Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re sharing with plan sponsors our thinking on why mental health parity protects your participants. Conditions such as depression, anxiety disorders and substance use disorder (SUD) correlate with serious medical conditions, and the post-pandemic need for mental #healthcare and #SUD services is still high. Addressing that need can improve participants’ health and manage costs. Learn why protecting participants’ #mentalhealth reaps benefits beyond the obvious ― and how Segal can help. Mental health issues are NOT to be taken lightly. They require an equal amount of attention the same as physical health. • People often label these issues as "just a phase" • Serious mental illnesses can decrease the lifespan of an individual up to 20 years. • The World Health Organisation estimates that the life expectancy of patients with severe mental health issues is reduced by 10-25 years. • These symptoms are not easy to spot but small behavioural changes should be noticed. • Try to observe unusual behavioural changes among your close ones. They might need help! #stopthestigma #mentalhealthawarenessmonth #psychologyfacts #mentalhealth #facts #spreadawareness

In 2018, Dr Rosa Parisi studied #mentalhealth and suicidal behaviour in people with #psoriasis. The study found that people with psoriasis receive treatments for mental health problems more often than people without psoriasis and so their mood-related disorders and suicide risk may be better monitored, treated and controlled. "Women are twice as likely to be diagnosed with depression and anxiety disorders." CAMH.( Canadian Mental Health Association) For decades lack of studies on women's health affected the quality of care women received from our health care system. Only in '93 was a policy made requiring women and minorities be included in clinical trials. This goes without saying women's mental health was overlooked for a long time, which created barriers in accessing mental health treatment. The situation has improved enormously but stigma still remains around mental health and this can influence someone's desire to access treatment. New options for treating mental health issues are now available and women today are better equipped to face these challenges. There’s no single cause for suicide. Suicide most often occurs when stressors and health issues converge to create an experience of hopelessness and despair. Depression is the most common condition associated with suicide, and it is often undiagnosed or untreated. Conditions like depression, anxiety, and substance problems, especially when unaddressed, increase the risk of suicide. Yet it’s important to note that most people who actively manage their mental health conditions go on to engage in life. RCBM can help you or your loved one. #suicideprevention
