As a mental health advocate, I believe it's important to consider alternatives to anxiety medications. While these drugs can help manage symptoms, they can't "cure" trauma. Instead, they only mask the underlying issues. Unfortunately, millions of children and adolescents are now taking antipsychotic drugs, which can have serious side effects such as weight gain and increased risk of diabetes. Additionally, these drugs can interfere with the brain's ability to process signals of pleasure, danger, and satisfaction. At a recent conference, I asked a group of psychologists about their protocol for treating OCD in children. To my surprise, all 10 of them said they would prescribe medication without considering other options like yoga, tapping, and meditation. It's time to raise awareness and consider alternatives to medication, especially for our children. While medication can be helpful in certain situations, it's important to remember that it's often just a crutch. When someone has a broken leg, crutches may be necessary for a certain period. However, a person can only fully heal when she learns to walk on her own again. Our brains deserve the same opportunity. Just for today, notice where you have plateaued. Where might you be ready to let go of the crutches? I know this might feel terrifying. What if I told you that all pain and discomfort is only asking to be loved? Might you consider feeling more of the emotions that you push away or repress? We get to decide if we organize our life around the loss of physical control, or if we grant ourselves permission to evolve beyond the pain. I had a client tell me something yesterday that helped to sum it up well. He said, “I spent much of my young adulthood trying to let go of my past, and find it ironic that I had to get closer to it in order to let it go.” May you gift yourself the opportunity to truly heal this holiday season. May you warmly love the self that maybe has been neglected in the past. 💛✨💛
