🗣 They are talking about us ❗ 🧠 More specifically, about the project leading by Dr Michal Kucewicz as part of the FIRST TEAM programme of FNP Foundation for Polish Science❗ 📖 A comprehensive report containing the most effective projects within the previously mentioned programme has just been published. As part of the publication, the Foundation for Polish Science has honoured the grant recipients who have achieved the greatest successes within their projects in the country but also abroad. 🗨 "Breakthrough technologies in the fight against disorders of the memory process" - The founder of the Brain and Mind Electrophysiology Lab summarises in an interview the main successes, breakthroughs and impact of the research that the entire team has carried out as part of this programme around the world. Among other things, Dr Michal Kucewicz talks about how the FIRST TEAM project has affected the development of ongoing research in the lab, how the devices used work and what tangible benefits are gained by patients who profit from the solutions developed. 🔬 FIRST TEAM is a programme implemented by the Foundation for Polish Science with EU funds. Two School of Medicine faculty were among four Duke faculty members elected to the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) on April 30 in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research. David Beratan, PhD, R.J. Reynolds Professor of Chemistry, professor of biochemistry, and professor of physics. Beratan is developing theoretical approaches to understand the function of complex molecular and macromolecular systems. Rich Mooney, PhD, George Barth Geller Distinguished Professor for Research in Neurobiology and professor of cell biology. Congratulations to Dr. Noham Wolpe, MD-PhD, on being awarded the Collaborative Research in Computational Neuroscience (CRCNS) grant, as part of the United States-Israel Binational Science Foundation-NSF programme. Together with Dr. Matthew Nassar from Brown University, the team will work on "Investigating the neurocomputational mechanisms of belief updating". We continuously form and update our beliefs about the world, and these beliefs guide our day-to-day behaviour. The way we update our beliefs based on new information can have serious consequences for our lives and well-being, as it can lead us to adopt fake news and conspiracy theories or experience mental health conditions, such as depression and psychosis. In this project Wolpe and his team will explore how people update their beliefs and what biological mechanisms underlie this process. We are pleased to share that the project, "Mathematical Challenges in Brain Mechanics" has been awarded a Centre for Advanced Study (CAS) at The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters (CAS) grant. This supports blue-sky research during the 2025/2026 academic year. Led by Professors Kent-Andre Mardal (University of Oslo & Simula researcher) and Jan Martin Nordbotten (University of Bergen (UiB)), the project addresses the novel mathematical challenges in understanding brain diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s through fluid dynamics and solute transport. The aim is to develop a unified theory for multi-physics, multi-scale, and mixed-dimensional problems by collaborating with leading mathematicians and neuroscientists worldwide. As Mardal explains, “A project at CAS means we can extend our networking activities towards international, renowned experts in mathematics and neuroscience. Throughout my scientific journey, I've been driven by a profound interest in technological solutions addressing problems that are of elementary importance to people and society. I conducted and published research spanning both methods-oriented computational and applied neuroscience topics. I am thrilled to share that I have now reached a significant milestone by completing my dissertation, “Brain Connectivity in Acute and Chronic Pain”, with highest distinction at the Technical University of Munich. My Master's thesis was the first official publication I did a year ago. Continuing my work to expand my research in computational neuroscience since then with my advisor to continue with project and dip my toes in a new project. Goal will always be to create something that contributes to scientific community for improvement on how we treat learn and understand certain diseases and overcome practical drawbacks using theoretical approach. 👤 Meet the EXCELScIOR team! Today with EXCELScIOR project ERA-Chair Researcher Dr. Inês A. T. A.! 👩💼 Dr. Inês A. T. A. has a degree in Psychology, and a PhD in Health Sciences. She has worked in the interconnection between #Psychology and #Neuroscience in the past 18 years, using psychological assessment, psychophysiology, neuroimaging and human behaviour measures to study memory, decision-making, social cognition and affective processes in healthy and clinical populations. She participated in many science communication activities as a two-sided route to bridge the gap between scientists and society. She was involved in science policy initiatives at the Portuguese Association of Grant-holding Researchers (#ABIC) and at the European Council of Doctoral Candidates and Junior Researchers (#Eurodoc). She has embraced open science through big team science collaborations and training initiatives. Her current research interests are knowledge gaps, measurement (methods choices), and the reform of the research assessment system, to improve quality of research processes and outputs, and to minimize the conflict between career progression pressures and the full adoption of research integrity values and practices. 🏃♀️ 🏊♀️ She loves hiking, running, swimming and learning from other humans (irrespective of age) whenever she gets the chance. We are thrilled to present our Scientist of the Month, Dr. Roberto Lent. Professor Roberto Lent brings a unique perspective to the field of neuroscience. His diverse background—from graduating in Medicine to pursuing a PhD in Biophysics in Brazil, and completing a postdoctoral stay in Psychology at MIT—adds to his innovative approach to understanding brain plasticity and development. Dr. Lent focuses on unraveling the complex mechanisms of neuroplasticity, and his work aims to understand how brain connections form and change throughout life. As he explains it: "My work focuses on understanding how brain connections form along life and how they become molded by the environment, for the good (education) or for the bad (diseases)." Dr. Lent's contributions include groundbreaking research on the corpus callosum and the discovery of long-distance plasticity in human brains. He also leads a research group studying brain plasticity in naturalistic settings, using portable brain imaging techniques. His work emphasizes the brain's ability to adapt and change, with implications for both normal development and pathological conditions. A key finding from his lab revealed that seemingly abnormal connections are actually present in normal brains, serving as a "connectomic reserve" for future development.
