As National Minority Health Month comes to a close, we echo the message from @MinorityHealth: Be the Source for Better Health for all! Here at H.O.P.E. Collective, we know that health equity serves everyone, especially people of color in rural communities. In rural spaces, we see firsthand how the power of collaboration can tackle health disparities. Here are some ways YOU can be a part of the change: 1. Support community gardens and farmers markets: Fresh produce is key to healthy living, but access can be limited. 2. Advocate for culturally-competent healthcare: Everyone deserves care that respects their background. ️ 3. Spread health literacy: Knowledge is power! Help others understand their health options. 4. Volunteer your time or skills: Clinics, food banks, and community centers often need a helping hand. The Westminster Community Health and Wellbeing Workers (CHWWs) have received high praise from the National Director for NHS England's Healthcare Inequalities Improvement Programme, Prof. Bola Owolabi, MRCGP MFPH(Hon), FRSPH, in her latest blog. Following a visit with the CHWWs, Bola describes how one resident calls them her 'saviour'. What do the CHWWs do? Bola explains: “Their approach to healthcare is proactive. Residents in their allocated area are visited at least once per month, enabling the CHWWs to identify problems as they arise and resolve them before they become larger issues by leveraging their relationships with relevant professionals or local services. It is a cogent example of important, deliberate action to narrow the health inequalities gap. The CHWWs initiative is a relatively new model. It is based on the Brazilian model – called the Family Health Strategy. Evidence has shown the model in Brazil has led to sustained improvements in hospital admissions, hospitalisations and mortality for chronic diseases, as well as improvements in immunisation and screening uptake.” Read more about how the CHWWs are helping to tackle health inequality here: https://lnkd.in/ekuGpxmw #Community #Health #Inequalities #Wellbeing

Announcement: Building a Healthier Maryland Public Health Systems Assessment As part of the development of the State Health Improvement Plan, the Building a Healthier Maryland team wants to gain a better understanding of the public health services that are currently being offered across the State. For this effort, we are conducting a brief survey of organizations to gather information on the types of services the organization provides, the populations they serve, the health concerns they address, and their community building efforts. This will allow us to leverage and align resources to address the health and wellbeing of all Marylanders. For this survey, we are asking one survey be completed on behalf of the organization; an “organization” can be any organization, program, agency or administration. To complete this survey on behalf of your organization, please click here: https://lnkd.in/ezJeMSPq

🚀 Transforming Public Health Policy to Address Health Care Disparities In the public health policy arena, significant strides are being made to address the health care disparities faced by vulnerable populations, especially people experiencing homelessness (PEH). Recent policy recommendations emphasize the need for integrated efforts across social, economic, and health sectors to enhance the accessibility and quality of cancer care for marginalised individuals. 🔑 Key Focus Areas: *Integration and Collaboration: Creating a more inclusive health system through stakeholder collaboration. *Tailored Services: Implementing tailored health services and support mechanisms, such as health navigators, to ensure equitable access. *Community Engagement: Utilising effective communication strategies and community involvement to improve cancer care outcomes. *Policy Development: Developing comprehensive policies that address the health and social needs of vulnerable populations through stakeholder collaboration and best practice sharing. The CANCERLESS project highlights the critical need for improved access to health care for marginalised communities. By adopting innovative, collaborative approaches, policymakers can drive systemic change and ensure all individuals receive quality cancer care. Let's champion these policy innovations and strive for a more equitable and compassionate healthcare system for everyone. 🌍💪 #PublicHealth #HealthcareEquity #PolicyInnovation #CancerCare #InclusiveHealth

In a recent report “Advancing Racial Equity in US Health Care” (April 2024) the Commonwealth Fund addresses health outcomes, care access, quality of care and use of health care services. The top three findings; 1. Deep seated racial and ethnic disparities persist across the US even in states with high performing health systems. 2. American Indians and Black Americans die at significantly higher rates from preventable and treatable causes compared with members of other racial and ethnic groups. 3. Substantial health and health care disparities exist between White communities and the Black, Hispanic, and American Indian and Alaska native (AIAN) communities in nearly all states. The Commonwealth Fund is a legitimate and reliable source of information and this report is extensive. Take a look.

Happy Public Health Week! If we want to shape better health outcomes for everyone, prioritizing public health is a must. I'm a believer that one of the most important aspects of public health is health equity. Health equity is all about providing everyone with a fair and just opportunity to be as healthy as possible, regardless of their background, race, socioeconomic status, or other factors. Health equity starts with ensuring that everyone has access to quality healthcare services without barriers, but that isn't where it ends. Sometimes, people may have access to certain healthcare services but aren't educated on those services or have their own negative experiences with healthcare institutions that keep them from seeking out the care they need. This is why community engagement is such an important part of improving health equity. Engaging communities in decision-making processes related to health policies, programs, and services can have a major impact. #PublicHealthWeek #HealthcareServices #HealthEquity
