As a master’s student at the University of California Santa Cruz, MCAF Project Leader Daniela Font undertook a capstone project to study poorly known aspects of sea turtle bycatch in northern Argentina. She spent three months visiting fishers from the Buenos Aires coast and came away from the experience with many questions, including: “How can we facilitate the respectful exchange of knowledge between researchers and fishers?” Read more about Daniela's work and what she learned from her first-ever experience collaborating with local communities on conservation efforts: https://bit.ly/3yaMt2R #MCAF

Three cheers for our incredible Animal Care team! 🎉🎉🎉 This week is Zookeeper Appreciation Week or (as we like to call it) Animal Care Appreciation Week! We have dozens of talented and dedicated animal care staff here at the Aquarium, and we are immensely proud and grateful for each one of them. These 75 individuals care for our nearly 10,000 animals, clean exhibits, maintain our water quality, educate the public, and so much more. Check out some of these sweet behind the scenes moments with some of our Animal Care professionals, and show our team some love in the comments! #NationalZookeeperWeek #AnimalCare #ZookeeperAppreciationWeek #AnimalCareAppreciation #AnimalCareProfessionals

A round of applause for a successful and collaborative leatherback disentanglement! 👏🏽👏🏽 Last week, the Aquarium's Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life scientists and members of the Aquarium's Animal Health team + Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation staff worked with Center for Coastal Studies' disentanglement team and the Barnstable Harbormaster's office to respond to a report of a live, entangled leatherback sea turtle in Cape Cod Bay. The entangled leatherback turtle was estimated to be ~6 ft. long and 400 lb. 😮 The turtle was successfully disentangled, examined by our Animal Health team, and given satellite and acoustic tagging devices. These tags will allow our Anderson Cabot Center scientists to assess survivorship and long-term behavior of the leatherback. The turtle was then released back into the ocean with cheering onlookers nearby! Congratulations to all on a successful disentanglement! 🎊 Note: This response was conducted under NMFS permit # 21301-01 and funded by NOAA Bycatch Reduction Engineering Program. #AndersonCabotCenter #AndersonCabotCenterForOceanLife #LeatherbackSeaTurtles #SeaTurtleRescue #SeaTurtles
