Dr. Kathryn Tuxbury was invited to the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History for the International Horseshoe Crab Day celebration, where she spoke about her career journey from studying horseshoe crab populations to working as a Senior Veterinarian here at the Aquarium. Her talk, “My Lifelong Molt: Horseshoe Crabs and a Lifetime of Learning,” covered some of her various research projects, as well as highlights of her clinical work as an aquatic animal veterinarian. Congrats to Dr. Tuxbury for receiving this honor!

Are you interested in saving manpower during your studies and lower stress for animals and staff? Then have a look at this course
Can Göttingen Minipigs be trained? YES! And you can learn how on the course "How to train your Göttingen Minipigs". We have invited Associate Professor at the Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences at the University of Copenhagen (Københavns Universitet), Dorte Bratbo Sørensen (DVM, PhD), to teach this course. She specialises in laboratory animal welfare and ethology, animal ethics, 3Rs, and Culture of Care, and her main research areas revolve around the use of positive reinforcement to train laboratory animals to voluntarily participate in procedures and enhancement of refinement through animal-centric management, husbandry, and procedures. An extract from the course description says: Göttingen Minipigs are incredibly intelligent creatures and require well-thought-of stimuli to thrive. They are highly trainable and love a good challenge. Every time you train your Göttingen Minipigs, you are also improving your understanding and communication with the animal. Correct handling and training, therefore, not only minimizes stress and improves minipig welfare but also makes the work with minipigs more rewarding and the data they generate more reliable. EARA and several of our members in Portugal have featured in a news report from SIC Notícias and Filipa Traqueia about the current state of animal research in the EU, and why it cannot be stopped completely. The article speaks with researchers, animal facility managers and veterinarians from Portuguese institutions to emphasise the responsible, careful use of animals in biomedical research, and the lengths taken to maximise their welfare and care. It also reports on the progress of replacing animals with non-animal methods, highlighting that the research community continuously strives to minimise and replace the use of animals wherever it is scientifically possible. However, the complexity of natural processes and systems means that existing alternatives are not sufficient to be full replacements for animal research, and to fully provide the answers to scientific questions. EARA events and projects officer, Nuno Gonçalves, explained in the article why it is so important for institutions to give animal research information to the public. This will help people to understand why animals are still needed, as well as the commitments of institutions to a animal welfare, the 3Rs and animal care, he said. Journal of Laboratory Animal Science (JLAS) is a peer-reviewed scientific journal that covers research and advancements in the field of laboratory animal science. The journal is dedicated to promoting ethical and humane use of animals in research, testing and education. It publishes original research articles, review articles, technical notes, and other scientific communications related to the care and management, laboratory animal medicine and welfare of laboratory animals. The journal also focuses on the latest developments in laboratory animal science, including new technologies, techniques, and methodologies that can enhance animal research and welfare. It provides a forum for researchers, veterinarians, animal care personnel, IAEC members to share their knowledge, experiences, and perspectives on laboratory animal science. The Journal of Laboratory Animal Science (JLAS) is the official journal of The Laboratory Animal Scientists' Association (LASA) India, and published biannually in English. Overall, the Journal of Laboratory Animal Science is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the humane and responsible use of laboratory animals for scientific purposes. https://lnkd.in/gsziAFu7

The 2023 annual report for the Concordat on Openness in Animal Research in the UK has been released. We’ve provided a few key insights from our signatories. The Concordat is composed of 121 organisations involved in research, including renowned institutions like Imperial College London and the University of Cambridge, who commit to being clear about when, how, and why animals are used in their research. Understanding Animal Research works with these organisations to enhance transparency and communications about the use of animals in research with the public. In our 2023 report, 97 of our signatories communicated their work on the 3R’s (explained below) with the media and public, 69 engaged with the local community about animal research, 67 offered lab tours to non-research staff, and 63 provided details to the public of the number and species of animals used at their institution. What are the 3R's? Organisations like ours aid scientists in implementing the 3R’s of animal research: - Replace their use of animals - Reduce the number of animals used when replacement isn’t possible - Refine the care of the animals to keep pain and suffering to a minimum The Concordat is an important agreement between research institutions to support confidence and trust in the life-sciences sector by fostering transparency and building dialogue with the public on the reality of the use of animals in research. #animalwelfare #researchtransparency #ukresearch

The annual reports of the Transparency Agreements (TA) on animal research in the Netherlands and Portugal, recently published, have charted good improvements in openness among their signatory institutions in the last year. The Portuguese report has been published this week, at the start of the Animal Research Open Week (#OPENWEEKPT24), showing that the majority of the signatory institutions have engaged with the public, while the Netherlands Transparency Agreement published its report during #BOARD24 and found that biomedical institutions are using an increasing number of ways to communicate with the public.
