Sooo many good nuggets in this wonderful new report from Hanger, Inc.. Here are just a few key takeaways- 📣For my upper limb friends, "patients with unilateral upper limb amputation are more likely to engage their prostheses during bimanual tasks. By contrast, individuals with bilateral upper limb amputation were more likely to report engaging their prostheses to complete unimanual tasks." 📣Lower limb orthoses friends, "Outcome measures were critical in a recent prospective study on the efficacy of microprocessorregulated knee-ankle-foot-orthoses (MPKAFOs). Hanger Clinic played a prominent role in the recruitment and execution of a recent analysis of this technology, ultimately observing the impact of MPKAFOs in improving balance, reducing falls, increasing walking speed, reducing pain, and increasing physical function in appropriately selected individuals" 📣Info on bone anchored prosthetics, "Hanger Clinic participated in the nation’s first FDA-approved feasibility study on bone-anchored prosthetics (Sinclair et al., 2022). Since that time, the organization has been actively involved in the prosthetic rehabilitation of those individuals managed with FDA-approved bone-anchored prosthetic implants." #oandp #aopa #hangerclinic #hangerinc American Orthotic and Prosthetic Association (AOPA) American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists Hanger Clinic

Jean-Luc Tilly, from The Leapfrog Group, emphasizes two crucial points in response to the JAMA Internal Medicine study on diagnostic errors in this recent article from Medical Economics. First, he notes that hospitals with limited access to specialists and delays in testing—common in non-academic medical centers—likely experience higher rates of diagnostic errors, suggesting a broader national challenge. Second, Tilly underscores that addressing diagnostic errors transcends individual clinician responsibility, highlighting the role of hospital leadership and the healthcare system in prioritizing and providing the necessary resources for accurate diagnostics. At Atalan, we echo Tilly's call to action by offering a solution that bridges the gap in access to specialized diagnostics, supporting healthcare leaders in their mission to elevate patient care and safety. Our network connects health systems to a broad array of specialized labs, ensuring timely and precise diagnostics, critical to overcoming the challenges outlined by Tilly. 💡 It's never too late to share good research findings 📰 Have a read of my article published this summer on factors influencing emergency physicians’ decision-making in out-of-hospital setting. 🚑 What started as a quest to better understand physicians’ decision-making processes and compliance to guidelines with the aim of improving patient care and safety, ended in an interesting analysis of challenges that healthcare professionals face in this line of work and more importantly high burden of personal responsibility placed on individuals for concerns more suitably addressed at the organizational level. 🏥 We need to start emphasizing institutional accountability and reevaluate the balance of responsibility within the healthcare sector, fostering the environment which will be safe not only for the patients, but also for those who care for the patients. 👨⚕️ 👩⚕️ I would like to thanks everyone who helped in performing this research, my mentors and co-authors Carl Savage, Jamie Linnea Luckhaus, MPH, Moa Malmqvist Castillo, Veronica Vicente, Henrik Lindlöf, and Kiku Pukk Härenstam. Special thanks to the physicians, my former colleagues, from the emergency services, who shared their experiences and provided invaluable insights. This paper is dedicated to all of you, in hopes that the results of this study will contribute to quality improvement efforts in the out-of-hospital emergency medical services. 🚑 🌟

Author, over 100k copies sold | Dermatologist | Speaker | Clinical Professor | Helping physicians and aspiring physicians build strong, energized careers
I was so excited to speak with Dr. Hardeep Singh, a patient safety researcher and Professor of Medicine. For students or physicians who are seeking to impact the systemic forces shaping medical care, this is an inspiring episode. --Dr. Singh is Co-Chief of the Health Policy, Quality, and Informatics Program at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center and Baylor College of Medicine. --One of the things that struck me during our conversation was how his career has been so mission-driven, starting with his observation of missed diagnoses during his years of practice as an internist in rural East Texas. Those experiences inspired him to seek out a research career, and later helped guide his efforts to impact policy. --His research on how to improve missed/delayed diagnoses has impacted many, and his research on how to improve the use of electronic health records (EHRs) has been used as the basis for policy changes by the Center for Medicare Services (CMS). He has also worked with the World Health Organization on patient safety issues. --At the same time, although he is very mission-driven, he describes how important perseverance and discipline have been throughout his career. --As he explains, it took him several years and 12 failed grant applications before he was finally able to move into his career as a researcher. --When I asked him what kept him going, he described his passion for the area of patient safety, but he also emphasized the importance of perseverance and the discipline to keep submitting grant applications. --He is also deeply committed to translating research findings into policy change, and he talks about the associated challenges. --To hear more, please see the link to the episode in the comments

I'm delighted to inform that our paper titled “Automated Quality Assessment System for Geriatric Care Management” is now available online! Our work develops and evaluates a novel computational quality assessment (QA) system designed to support nurses in managing geriatric pressure ulcers. This system leverages our Quality Assessment Temporal Patterns (QATP) methodology, which transforms clinical guidelines into declarative-knowledge temporal-abstraction patterns. These patterns facilitate retrospective longitudinal analysis of care quality, focusing on adherence to evidence-based guidelines. This research not only demonstrates the technical feasibility and functional capability of the QA system but also highlights its efficiency in practical application. We believe that such automated systems can significantly empower nursing staff, enabling them to manage more patients effectively while ensuring adherence to clinical guidelines. The full paper is available (free for the next 50 days) at the following link: https://lnkd.in/d_juznEF A huge thank you to all the co-authors who contributed to reaching this milestone: Prof. Yuval Shahar, Dr. Erez Shalom, Dr. Rony Weiss, Maya Selivanova and Nogah Melamed Cohen.
