Higher Ed Leadership & Culture Strategist | Moving Colleges & Universities from Silos to Synergy | Executive Coach | Mental Fitness (PQ) | EQ | OD | Crucial Conversations | Leadership Development | Human-Centered Design
Talk about a sobering article for anyone in higher ed. While the value of attending a brick and mortar institution has come into question most especially in recent years, this shines a light on the very different viewpoints that exist around the costs and benefits of getting a degree. It's not appropriate for colleges and universities to react to statistics like the article presents - that's not a good way to do business. That said, it IS appropriate to use such information as a wakeup call to step back and take a long hard look at what the institution is doing and offering its stakeholders (especially students and those paying for their education), and the value those stakeholders receive in return. Such self-examination is likely to uncover opportunities for change. But given that higher ed generally is a bastion of tradition, change can feel like turning a colossal ship against a strong tide. That's where strong leadership comes in. Having a shared vision for the direction of the institution, and equipping all players with the tools to bridge silos, respectfully hold difficult conversations, and collaborate on key initiatives can make the difference between evolution and extinction. So where is your institution likely to land? And what are you doing to ensure that? Our firm partners with higher ed executive teams to address the disconnect between academic and administrative functions that impairs results. New report highlights challenges faced by Texas community college students who transfer to four-year universities. Only 45% of transfer students in Texas obtain a bachelor’s degree within six years, with even lower completion rates for Black and adult students. The study suggests the need for more support for transfer students to improve degree completion rates. Additionally, low-income and adult learners are less likely to transfer to a four-year university. Texas legislators have made changes to community college financing to incentivize transfers, but more work is needed to ensure transfer credits are accepted and to provide clearer degree plans. What are your thoughts on these findings?
