Just watched a great TED talk by Jonathan Foley on climate solutions and it reminded me of this analogy someone told me that I've always remembered. They said that the climate emergency is like having a bathtub that is overflowing, and the tap is still on. A lot of companies talk about "carbon removal" through tech that is expensive, resource intensive, and also not ready yet. Or they talk about "offsetting emissions" usually by donating to environmental orgs or planting trees (which are usually monocultures that may or may not be invasive where they are planted). That's equivalent to opening the drain of the bathtub. But it's still overflowing, and the tap is still on. We need to *turn off the tap*! We need a drastic, widescale reduction in emissions produced. Most of this is the responsibility of industry. As professionals who care about a liveable future we MUST be pushing our employers to cut emissions drastically, now. But their actions are ultimately not within our control. And when we don't see and experience changes, it can be discouraging. SO I also think we must be creating changes in our own personal lives as well, which can create ripple effects outward. You can do tangible things to reduce emissions, like: - Massively cutting back on meat consumption and buying local, sustainable meat when you do eat it (which also means a lower grocery bill!) - Supporting local, sustainable agriculture - Reducing your energy use (& if you have the budget, getting solar and an EV/Hybrid) - Reducing your digital footprint (like deleting emails that have to be stored on a physical server somewhere that uses a lot of energy) - Driving less and using transit, carpools, or biking/walking more You can also create new systems for the future by planting seeds of regeneration: - Planting native plants in your yard to support biodiversity, resilience, and healthy ecosystems - Growing your own food (or learning to forage!) - Creating an economy of trades and favors within your social circle - Petitioning local governments to create safer multi-use roads and mandate sustainable development practices - Examining your relationship to consumption and working to shift it - Healing your relationship with earth, and starting to embrace nature rather than keep it at arms length Climate change is the biggest issue we face in our lifetime, and we need a group effort of people and companies who cut emissions NOW and plant seeds that will flourish later. What are your thoughts?? #climateaction #climatechangesolutions #nativeplants #emissionsreduction #sustainability #sustainablefood #sustainabledevelopment https://lnkd.in/grtbhyh9

#snsinstitutions #snsdesignthinkers #designthinking Environmental sustainability is about ecological balance. For nearly two millennia, humans have been carbonizing our planet, which has contributed to global climate change. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the United Nations body for assessing the science related to climate change, it is undeniable that human actions have impacted the planet, resulting in the warming of the atmosphere, ocean, and land. As we continue to see the negative impacts of climate change, an increasing number of governments, organizations, and individuals are embracing and promoting environmental sustainability. These various groups are working towards the lofty goal of decarbonizing our world to protect our global ecosystems for the sake of future generations.

During Climate Week, I got to listen to Dr Adil Najam the President of the WWF International. His words resonated: "Stop telling me what you're planning to do and start telling me what you’ve done”. This mindset is crucial for climate action and CCS - talk isn’t enough, we need tangible results, he also reminded us that if we do nothing then Mother Nature has a tendency to fight back - the ongoing extreme weather events in Florida and parts of Europe being prime examples. I thought to link this back to my post of yesterday - Northern Lights is and example of something that has actually been done - setting and example. But to really grow these efforts I am reminded of some of the other pleas I heard during climate week around: 1) The need to make regulations and permitting simpler, clearer, and more unified so companies can act quickly and where valid issue carbon credits. 2) Getting access to funding and helping start-ups bridge the "valley of death" for sectors like DAC, geothermal, and CCS will be essential for scaling up these solutions. 3) Sharing risks across the value chain and not trying to load all the risk on to one value chain component. This challenges our normal ways of doing business where we try to offload as much risk as possible. 4) The impact market forces can have - for example making us as consumers part of the answer, can we purchase a lower carbon trainer in this example? or like one of my posts last week those first movers looking to purchase lower carbon steel. A very thought provoking week. The attached photos capture some highlights from Climate Week: 1. WWF's reminder that nature, through events like hurricanes and wildfires, is fighting back. 2. A conversation about CO2 content in shoes. 3. Looking back at New York from Brooklyn after an intense New York Climate Week. #ClimateAction #CCS #Sustainability
