At TCK Education Consultants; trauma-informed practices are a strengths-based approach that acknowledges the widespread impact of trauma on student's lives. It's about understanding and responding to the potential effects of trauma on individuals, families, and communities. So here we have 3 subtitles for trauma informed practices: -Building Trauma Informed Systems: Being trauma-informed is a lens through which educators can reflect, analyze, and design their classroom and school structures. -Creating Safe Spaces: Meeting all students where they are is not just an academic imperative, but it is also essential for the growth and development of the whole child. -Disrupting Deficit Narratives: Redefining classroom management starts with dismantling punitive systems and, instead, implementing restorative practices that focus on wellbeing which is essential to being trauma-informed. #tckeducation #NYC #education #educators #students #learning #teaching #school #futureofeducation #EducationForAll

Did your child's mock exam results disappoint them? And not because they didn’t try. But because they lacked the support and coaching, they needed. If, like many, you suspect your child to be neurodivergent, or has specific learning difficulties, it can be challenging to ask for support. Why? Because what if you’re wrong, and it’s actually just their behaviour or lack of effort? Trust your instincts – you know your child better than anyone else. You may have noticed certain traits in your child that suggest learn differently. Or you may see them getting frustrated or uncomfortable in certain social situations. Whatever the reason it is easier than you think to get the support you need! Our team of diagnostic assessors includes Educational Psychologists and Specialist Assessors who work with children and adults age 14 and over. They are super friendly and extremely approachable, making the experience for both you and your child an easy one. 📝 The Importance of Trauma-Informed Approaches in Education As educators, we know that children spend a significant amount of their time in schools. For many, schools are not just places of learning but also environments where they build relationships, face challenges, and develop emotionally. This is why it's so crucial to recognize the impact that trauma can have on a child's behavior and well-being. Trauma-informed training for teachers is essential. Rather than relying solely on traditional contingency systems to address behavioral problems, we need to equip our educators with the skills to understand and respond to the root causes of these behaviors. By fostering a trauma-informed environment, we can help students feel safe, supported, and understood. This shift will not only improve behavioral outcomes but also promote resilience, emotional intelligence, and overall well-being. It's time to invest in our teachers’ development so they can, in turn, help build more resilient children who can thrive both academically and emotionally. 🌱💡 #TraumaInformedCare #Education #TeacherTraining #StudentWellbeing #Resilience #EducationMatters #MentalHealthMatters

Do what works.
Shortly after the pandemic, Dr. Erica Fanning, a school psychologist at the Coxsackie-Athens Central School District (CACSD) in New York, noticed a troubling trend: their students were consistently struggling to reach proficiency in math. Despite various efforts, proficiency leveled off at 50%-60% for kindergarten through eighth grade students, according to the FastBridge aMath assessments. Fanning recognized that to improve, a systemic instructional approach was needed rather than focusing on individual interventions. She found #SpringMath. As clinicians, how can we facilitate emotional growth in children when those emotions are particularly strong? The next time a student tells you about a time where they felt uncomfortable or upset, remember these 4 steps ⬇️ ⭐ Empathize ➡️ "It sounds like you are/were feeling really sad." ⭐ Validate ➡️ "If I didn't have anyone to play with, I might feel sad too." ⭐ Re-state ➡️ "You were sad wishing someone would play with you." ⭐ Use silence ➡️ Wait to see if the child has more to tell you. Remember, sometimes we have to go with what is happening in a session in the moment to make clinical decisions about how far/much to push. Although you may need to actively slow yourself down at first, over time you’ll become more comfortable facilitating these discussions at a slower pace. And your student will appreciate your support! How do you facilitate emotional growth in your students who struggle with BIG emotions? Be sure to share this with a fellow #slp in your community! #socialemotionallearning #socialemotionalskills #SEL #speechies #emotionalintelligenceforkids #slp2be #slpa

A current trend in education that I find very important is integrating trauma-informed education strategies. Trauma-informed teaching practices involve creating a supportive and empathetic learning environment that acknowledges and addresses the impact of trauma on students. Key elements include fostering safety and trust, promoting emotional regulation, providing predictable routines, offering choice and autonomy, and prioritizing collaboration and connection. These practices are important in creating a space where students feel understood, respected, and empowered to learn and grow. How would trauma informed teaching practices be best integrated into schools? Have you noticed any trauma informed practices in action that have created positive outcomes?
