Closing remarks by European Commission Vice-President Věra Jourová on the debate at the European Parliament on "Urgent need to revise the medical device regulation" on 9 October 2024: "I understand the calls for an urgent revision of the Medical Device Regulations. However, after having worked together on extending the transitional periods, I would strongly caution against a rushed initiative. We must get this right on the basis of data and analysis together with the necessary involvement of all the relevant stakeholders. The two Regulations on medical devices and in vitro diagnostics adopted are significant and complex pieces of legislation. The targeted evaluation process has already started and it is important to gather the inputs and viewpoints needed for a thorough assessment. In line with the political indications of President von der Leyen, the Commissioner-Designate for Health will prioritise the evaluation and any necessary follow-up actions. #medicaldevices #invitrodiagnostics #MDR #IVDR #EUMDR #EUIVDR #medtech In my personal opinion, after seeing and hearing the speeches, it seems to me that there is a certain willingness on the part of some representatives of the parliament to insist, rightly, for a change of the #MDR in the short term, in particular on the part of the representatives of the EPP, especially for issues related to the lack of #MedicalDevices on the market and the high costs and times of certification that would lead manufacturers to other markets, in particular at the USA (FDA). Dr. #PeterLiese pointed out that there was already a proposal for an amendment which, with appropriate modifications, could be implemented quickly. Others, such as Dr. Ignazio Marino, pointed out that part of the current fleet of medical devices, which hospitals currently own, is subject to obsolescence and that this factor can negatively affect the effectiveness and safety of MDs. 𝐎𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐝. However, the committee representative ( #VěraJOUROVÁ  ) was reluctant to amend the regulation in the short term, due to the lack of sufficient contributions, while stressing that an evaluation process is already underway. Clearly the speeches were short and focused on macro-aspects, no one was able to go into detail, the vote will take place during the next session. From what I understand, the issue is a purely political one and the solution is not close, however some news should arrive by the end of the year, but the extent of these news does not necessarily mean it will be shocking.
