🌟 Excited to share the Title Story of Bioengineering, Volume 9 Issue 4: Microbiome Analysis via OTU and ASV-Based Pipelines—A Comparative Interpretation of Ecological Data in WWTP Systems. 🥼 This paper is authored by Jan Torsten Jeske and Claudia Gallert, from University of Applied Science Emden/Leer, Germany. 💡 In this work, thermophilic anaerobic co-digestion experimental data, together with primary and waste-activated sludge prokaryotic community data, were analyzed with two pipelines that apply different principles when dealing with technical, sequencing, and PCR biases. Exciting news! 🎉 A new preprint from my PhD research is out and delves into the production, use, and quotas of a key microbial currency in cultures and the Northwest Atlantic Ocean. 🌊 Our paper is the second ever environmental quantifications of pseudocobalamin, a metabolite that is hypothesized to influence marine microbial community composition and activity. We also suggest a simple proxy to estimate pseudocobalamin inventory, which is no easy feat! Our research combined targeted metabolomics with targeted proteomics to investigate the protein to co-factor relationship, and factors that influence it. As you can imagine, putting culture measurements into an environmental context is not as straightforward as it may seem, but with the help of some wonderful co-authors, we were able to make it happen. M. Alejandra Soto Anna Gleason Nan Chen We're excited to move forward with the review process and share our findings with the scientific community. Stay tuned for more updates! ✨

Happy 50 th birthday Cell by Cell Press! 🎂 In the anniversary issue, our colleague A. Murat Eren and Jillian Banfield describe how modern microbiology uncovered the once unimaginable richness & dynamism of microbial communities. Microbes were the only life form on Earth for most of the history of our planet. Even today, they still make up the majority of species that are vital to the health of our planet. They produce much of our oxygen, help plants grow, maintain biogeochemical cycles and thus sustain our ecosystems. “In our opinion, microbiology, with its goal of understanding microbial life and its potential to use microbes to solve our most pressing problems through advances in biotechnology and biomedicine, is arguably the most important science in the middle of the 21st century,” says A. Murat Eren. But the authors also recognize that we are still in the process of learning how to use huge amounts of data to resolve yet-to-be-understood processes of natural ecosystems through integrative, interdisciplinary, and scalable means.
