☕️ On Thursday July 18, 2024! Join the NYIC team for the last tea sesh of the summer! Immigrant tea time has been a time to gather, discuss and learn about the many issues that impact our community. We recognize that these topics can be heavy at times. We will use our time together this month to share how the daily stressors in life impact us. We will reflect on how it all shows up in our bodies and regroup by engaging in a community healing circle. Grab your favorite beverage & join your fellow comrades on Thursday to reflect, release & regroup! This online event series is free and open to all! Sign up at nyic.me/teatime.

Multi award winning keynote speaker and disability advocate. D&I and Disability with humour and shameless name-dropping… Yes yes, including TEDx!
Positivity Post of the Day It's 'World MS Day' today, hurrah! That's my flavour of disability and although it's not a competition, I have it pretty bad... The theme for this year is 'diagnosis'. Mine came fifteen years after my first symptoms in 1992. May 1st 2007. By then I had: - intense pins 'n needles from time to time - bladder issues - erectile dysfunction - lack of temperature control/understanding - occasional stumbling on my left foot - chronic (ie forever, relentless) fatigue When finally the wise Mrs W cottoned onto something being seriously wrong, I was sent to a urologist (a 'down below' doctor) and a neurologist (a brain guru). After a barrage of tests over three to four months - the worst of which by far was the lumbar puncture - I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. I believe it's the most common disabling disease in young adults, typically diagnosed between the ages of 20-40. I snuck in at 39. I was later re diagnosed from 'relapsing remitting' to 'highly active relapsing remitting'. And later to 'secondary progressive'. Do I wish I had gone to the GP and been diagnosed earlier? Not really. The attitude back then was to wait and see. And the treatments back then weren't that great anyway. Nowadays the understanding is to get in early and hard with powerful treatments. Hey ho. The biggest impact though, worse than all the symptoms I have now, is how friends and colleagues and society treats you as a disabled person. I explored this in my recent TEDxKingstonUponThames talk. Please please give it a watch. I think it's an important message... https://lnkd.in/g9a5cPcB

The Jordan Legacy CIC's #ZeroSuicideSociety #JoinTheDots Launch Conference will be like no other #SuicidePrevention Conference you've ever been to. Indeed, there might never be another suicide prevention event/tour/festival like this because it's: > a unique launch of a radical new approach to suicide prevention to get the numbers of suicides on a downward trend, towards zero; > demonstrating our transformational philosophy where the focus is not on the traditional competitive 'priority groups' model but a co-ordinated, collaborative approach where "Everyone Must Be a Priority for Someone"; > a ground-breaking gathering of speakers, panel members, interviewees & performers; > a conference that not only avoids the traditional trap of focusing just on #MentalHealth issues, but puts 'the #healthcare piece' in perspective - it's just one piece of a much bigger, more complex puzzle; > breaking the mould in trying to highlight all the different causes & contributory factors driving suicide deaths, attempts & plans - with our symbolic 'missing piece of the puzzle' & our 'empty chair' reminding us of other factors, people & organisations we might be missing; > covering issues you wouldn't usually get at a suicide prevention conference, like suicides caused by systemic injustice & institutionalised cruelty; > 30 people speaking from the stage - a mix of talks/presentations, panel discussions & interviews - to help provide insights into all the pieces of the puzzle and how they connect together; > maximising opportunities for audience engagement & connecting people together (as well as all the issues). In contrast to the many past suicide prevention conferences with a Programme (this is only part tongue-in-cheek!) comprising 'male doctors in white coats, academics in Tweed jackets & politicians with two faces'...then 1-2 token 'Lived Experience Speakers'... ...more than half the 30 people talking from our stage at the Baths Hall have #LivedExperience of suicide. https://lnkd.in/eut9cd4J Finally, I had to source a suitable band to close our Conference. I researched the history of the Baths Hall. Many famous bands had played there - The Who, The Animals, the Rolling Stones - but the band that had played there the most times was local: The Rumble Band. The line up has changed a few times over-the-years but they're still going strong. Still a fantastic live band. A 13-piece Soul & Motown ensemble. I continued to 'Join the Dots'. I thought 'the Detroit Sound' would be appropriate as the global #ZeroSuicide movement began (at the Henry Ford Health System)...in Detroit. So I booked them. The Rumble Band will close our Launch Conference at the Baths Hall in Scunthorpe on 12 June with a 30-minute set. Their Soul & Motown Sound will speak to our souls... ...and, highly appropriate for a suicide prevention conference, they'll play us out with the Sam & Dave classic "Hold On, I'm Coming"! https://lnkd.in/ejYZ8ZvX
