Approximately 10% of children on the U.S. liver transplant waiting list die before receiving a transplant, largely due to the lack of size-matched organs. Dr. Mercedes Martinez, medical director of the Intestinal Transplant Program at the Center for Liver Disease and Abdominal Organ Transplantation at #NYPColumbia, is an advocate for wider use of technical variant liver transplantation (TVLT), a surgical procedure in which a partial liver graft from living or deceased donors is implanted, allowing increased access to organs for children on the waitlist. On #NYPAdvances, Dr. Martinez shares her perspective on how to safely increase the use of TVLT, and calls on the medical community to work together to improve awareness and education about this lifesaving procedure: https://nyphosp.co/3SP43Ai Columbia University Irving Medical Center, Weill Cornell Medicine
