It was a privilege to speak about Women and Climate Change at this event today hosted by Fatima Khan-Shah, Tracy Brabin, Mayor of West Yorkshire's inclusivity champion. Climate change is frightening, but it's also an opportunity to change our systems and plan a #fair and #just future for all. How are we going to make our investments to acheive #netzero benefit women and other disadvantaged groups? Some thoughts: ✔ We need good, gender disaggregated data: for example if there is a 21% increase in cycling in West Yorkshire, who are these new cyclists? If we know, then we can respond in the right way and see what works and what doesn't. ✔ Inclusive design for urban 'hardware' and 'software': are we thinking about women in the way that we design our streets and spaces? Are we maintaining them in a way that is fair (e.g. gritting the pavements in the snow as well as the roads)? Last week I was privileged to hear from The Anti-Slavery Collective's newly appointed CEO Sarah Woodcock and founder HRH Princess Eugenie on the impact (and scale) of modern day slavery within business and industry, joining my fellow OPUS members to hear about a topic deserving of much attention. I was startled to hear this global epidemic affects 50m+ no. people, and is the 3rd largest emitter of carbon 🤯. Whilst anti-slavery initiatives in #property and #construction are the norm, it is a sector that is highly vulnerable to exploitation. The construction industry is paramount in our pathway to decarbonising real estate (retrofit, supply of carbon neutral products, building green infrastructure etc), which must place in equal regard the human component at a time of spiralling costs, labour shortages, fragmentation of inspections, high-levels of migrant labour, %'s of minimum wage workers - which only fuels exploitation. Those in real estate can do more, starting at a policy, strategy and investment level: ✅ All workers must be registered with a construction card scheme ✅ Verify right to work information ✅ Complete audits of worker contracts ✅ Enforce a culture of compliance with all supply chain partners ✅ Provide training (modern day slavery carries many forms and isn't isolated to regions across the globe - but examples from Manchester shared) ✅ Use verified labour agents ✅ Vet supply chain partner processes Thank you to OPUS and The Anti-Slavery Collective. #moderndayslavery #humanimpact

It's the joy in these workers' voices for me. This story by More Perfect Union is a powerful example of how federal investments—our public dollars—can advance the public good by creating dignified unionized jobs with a living wage and full benefits. These jobs, and the security they afford working families, were made possible by the massive funding available through the Inflation Reduction Act. Over the next several years, we'll likely see many endeavors similar to this, which is why Marguerite Casey Foundation launched our Public Dollars for Public Good (PDPG) initiative. PDPG is designed to support grant recipients organizing communities and unlocking federal funds in ways that help us all experience and reimagine what our world could be like if our public dollars were used to build a thriving multiracial democracy. Our inaugural PDPG funding provided more than $5M in general operating grants to fuel organizations advancing economic justice and ensuring federal investments like the Inflation Reduction Act reach communities that have long been excluded from access to these funds. Central to the success of our PDPG program, and stories like the one told by workers in this video, is the role of organizing. Worker organizing, in this case with Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA), is central to ensuring public dollars make it into the pockets of working people.   If all this is possible in Blue Oval City, in rural western Tennessee, it’s possible across the country if we organize to win it. Every worker and every community deserves as much.

Through #International #Workers' #Day, #awareness is spread about the vital #contributions of workers to #prosperity and development. We all are labourers…..! On this labour day, we want to respect not only labourers but the whole working class because if we think about it from a different perspective, every one of us is a labour. We all are working for our clients, and clients are serving their customers. This means that we all are a part of the labour community. either it is #PhysicalLabour or it is #MentalLabour. You just need to decide on which side you belong to. Now, let’s go one layer deeper. Physical labour is primarily a very important part of a #community’s #development and is most respectable. Because all farmer-brothers and sisters are the #backbone of our #country. So, we at Snail Integral LLP, use our mental labour #power to cater our #clients.
