Reducing the risk of flooding impacting our communities 💚 💙 Blue Green Newcastle launched in 2024 as we set out to better protect our city from flooding events. We're exploring a number of schemes through Blue Green Newcastle to implement innovative flood and water management techniques that make us more resilient to climate change. It will see a range of measures implemented like this scheme at Kenton Bar, which Cllr Juna Sathian, Newcastle City Council Cabinet Member for Climate and Transport, recently visited. This has seen the installation of basins, adapting the local landscape to capture excess water and reduce the risk of floodwater affecting local households, schools and other premises. 🗣️ "It's really important we invest in flood resilience measures, especially with the number of extreme weather events we're seeing across the world," said Cllr Sathian. "Managing flood risk is a priority for my portfolio and Blue Green Newcastle is already helping to protect homes, businesses and infrastructure in the city, and we're committed to enhancing our flood resilience through this project in the years to come."

Well, the timing could hardly have been more pertinent. At the end of a week that saw many parts of Oxfordshire hit by flooding, we held our ‘Oxfordshire Underwater’ event, looking at flood response and resilience. Many thanks to all the groups, organisations and individuals who came along to discuss this vital topic today. The impact of flooding is increasing every year as climate change makes extreme weather events more and more common. When it comes to flood prevention, resilience and protection, there are no simple answers. Everyone has a role to play and so it was valuable to hear such a wide range of views, experiences and opinions on what 'good' looks like. Yesterday we announced that we are planning to invest an extra £1.5 million in 2025-26 to improve highway drainage, especially following the flooding in the county this year caused by exceptional weather. But there is much more that needs to be done. Working with the Environment Agency, Thames Water, the city, district and parish councils, the North East Cotswold Farmers Cluster, environmental groups, local communities and others, we are keen to learn from recent flooding about how best to tackle these devastating incidents as well as building up resilience to them in the future.

**From the Latest Security & Resilience Update: Severe Flooding Impacts in Texas** The recent severe weather events in Texas have not only claimed lives but also challenged critical infrastructure systems, including water and wastewater utilities. As reported by WaterISAC, the extensive flooding affected at least 88 counties, with numerous water systems disrupted and boil water notices issued in several communities. Key Highlights: – Widespread Impact: FEMA reports ongoing moderate to major river flooding, with millions still under flood warnings. – Infrastructure Damage: Significant overflows reported at wastewater treatment facilities, including a major incident in Waco, leading to over 3.5 million gallons of overflow. – Community Response: State and local authorities have conducted over 600 rescues, and Governor Greg Abbott has issued a disaster declaration for 91 counties. This event underscores the importance of understanding and preparing for flood risks, especially as climate change intensifies the frequency and severity of such natural disasters. WaterISAC recommends utilities review resources such as the EPA’s "Flood Resilience: A Basic Guide for Water and Wastewater Utilities" to better protect and prepare their infrastructures. Across England, more than 5.5 million homes and businesses are at risk of flooding. We know this is felt more keenly in our region, with 28% of land below sea level, and a fast, changing climate. This is why we're working tirelessly to improve our network’s resilience and mitigate the impact of flooding. The Environment Agency’s #FloodActionWeek, couldn’t be more timely. It’s been a very wet autumn so far. We’re already seeing elevated river levels, high groundwater and surface water that’s struggling to drain away in parts of our region. With the Met Office predicting more intense rain fall, it’s set to be a challenging winter. The financial cost of flooding can be thousands, but this is nothing compared to the physical and emotional impact it has on those involved. While we can’t stop the rain, we’re committed to doing our bit. Part of our fast-tracked £100million investment this year includes £17million spent on increasing sewer capacity, investigating infiltration, and relining pipes. What’s even more important is how we work in partnership to tackle flooding holistically with everyone involved, which is why we’ve helped set up 11 multi-agency groups in specific flooding hotspots to bring the right people together. But this work is complex and will take time, we still need to be prepared for this winter. You can sign up for flood warning’s here: https://lnkd.in/eETr2gm. With flood warnings issued for parts of Queensland AUS, it’s a timely reminder that flooding doesn’t just leave behind water damage—it can also significantly increase the risk of fires. Water ingress can damage electrical systems, compromise gas lines, and leave behind flammable debris, creating hidden hazards that are often underestimated. For fire investigators, recognizing these risks is vital in uncovering the causes of post-flood fires. In our latest blog, we explore how fires can arise after flooding events and outline steps that both investigators and property owners can take to mitigate these dangers. https://lnkd.in/ggf3mrTg Have you encountered fire risks following a flooding event? Or as a fire investigator, have you dealt with cases where flooding or water ingress played a role in causing a fire? Share your experiences and insights in the comments below—we’d love to hear from you! #firesafety #floodrecovery #fireinvestigation #wateringress #publicsafety #whatthefireau #firescience #fireandwater

Storm Bert has recently caused severe flooding across the UK, leading to at least five fatalities and leaving 350,000 homes without power. Over 500 homes and businesses have been inundated, with approximately 100 flood warnings still active. This series of extreme weather events has intensified scrutiny of the UK's preparedness for climate-related incidents, highlighting concerns over the maintenance and effectiveness of flood defences. A report by the Public Accounts Committee earlier this year criticised the current approach to flood defence, describing it as "contradictory and self-defeating." Climate scientists have found that the record-breaking wet weather over the past 18 months, leading to significant flooding, was made ten times more likely and 20% wetter due to human-caused global heating. https://lnkd.in/exuGAUQ8 #climatechange
