One of the most common excuses to avoid public transport is "The next public transport station is just too far away!". But what if you could access a bike, e-scooter or minibus anywhere, anytime, to quickly and safely reach the closest public transport station?  Public transport operators are discovering the great benefits of new mobility services as “last-mile connection” since they also make public transport much more attractive. Apart from bike- or scooter-sharing, minibuses can serve as climatised feeder to metro or bus stations. In the future, driverless on-demand shuttles can provide 24/7 connections to public transport.    Our Mobility team advises the public and private sector globally on how to identify and fill gaps in their public transport networks with various mobility services. If you think of mass transit as a subway system, you might be skeptical that LA can pull off a “car free Olympics” in 2028. But if you really look at LA’s transit system, you can see they can pull it off, especially if they add bus capacity. Sure, it only has 2 subway lines. But LA also has made major investments in recent years in buses, bus rapid transit, light rail, and bike share. LA’s multimodal system services a million daily passengers and features the country’s busiest light rail and second busiest bus network. I have no doubt they will get there (or get really close and fill in the gap with ride share). And when LA does pull it off, it will change how people think about cities and mass transit.

It is the end of the line for Glasgow's 44-year-old subway cars, as the last old-style trains travel the underground loop for the final time. The city's subway has been gradually phasing out the old trains since December and replacing them with new wheelchair-accessible modern cars. In total 17 trains have been gradually brought into service during 2024. The new rolling stock is just one part of a £288m upgrade programme to the subway system that will feature platform doors and driverless trains in future. Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT), which operates the subway, said the two final trains were completing an estimated 2.6million miles each in passenger service - 400,600 loops of the system. The old-style trains were introduced to passenger service on 16 April 1980 as part of the system's second modernisation project, which started in May 1977. Glasgow's Subway, often dubbed the 'Clockwork Orange' due to its striking orange colour and single loop design, has undergone its third modernisation since 2012. This included a refurbishment of all 15 stations, a new smart ticketing system, new rolling stock (trains), and a new signalling, communication and control-room system being introduced. The third-generation trains also have the capability to be driverless, which the operator aims to introduce in the future. SPT will also introduce platform screen doors to station platforms, as part of the £288m upgrades. CRE Terms: Talking Transit A location’s “Transit Score” measures ease of access to public transport options like buses, trams, cable cars and trains – essentially any public method for getting from A to B. “Transit Score” also falls on a scale from 0-100, with anything below 50 considered as “minimal or some transit,” while a score from 50-69 indicates “good transit.” Higher than that, the score is labeled as “Excellent” (70-89) or above 90 points as a “Rider’s Paradise” with world-class transport. There’s also a separate “Bike Score” that measures the suitability of a location for cyclists, taking into account road connectivity, hill slopes and bike lanes. Introducing the New R211T Open-Gangway Train to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's New York City Subway System. For some perspective, the MTA’s 6,500 train cars are an average of 26 years old, with the oldest being 48 years old. The R211T is a new 10-car train and linked together as if the entire train was one long subway car. Safety, comfort, access, and experience were the building blocks to the new design, packed with technology and innovation.
