At Barrick, we prioritize responsible mining through community-led decision-making. Our tool for implementing our community development vision is the Community Development Committee — or CDC — which we establish at every operation. ⭐ A CDC is an elected group from the community whose role it is to allocate the mine’s community independent investment budget to projects aligned with community priorities and needs. ⭐ Each CDC is made up of a mix of local leaders as well as representatives from women, youth and disadvantaged groups in the community. ⭐ Each site’s community investment budget is decided annually on a needs and projects basis, and is driven by the CDC. ⭐ To reinforce community ownership and engagement with projects, we work to ensure communities and patrons are invested themselves, either through contribution of funding, time, resources or land. State Negotiation Team Holds Talks with Landowners on Porgera Project The State Negotiation Team working on the community development agreement (CDA) for the Porgera Project held a meeting with landowners to discuss their benefits. The project is jointly owned by the Government and Barrick Niugini Limited (BNL), with the government and its partners owning 51% equity and BNL owning 49%. The meeting was attended by 25 Special Mining Lease (SML) landowner agents, ward councillors of the Porgera Rural local level government, and other stakeholders. We spent some time out at Millgrove last week exploring options to boost power security for this small Yarra Valley community.    This is a larger project the Millgrove Residents Action Group members considered and tested as part of the development of their 9 community resilience priorities, and one they thought would take some time.    🌱 Priority: Create an energy independent Millgrove by developing local renewable power capacity and a micro-grid in the community.    Through their good planning, and connections to interested corporate partners, they are able to consider this possibility a lot earlier than they thought. It's easy to come away energised from spending time with the MRAG members. They work together well, bouncing off each other using the skills and interests each has. As a young, #ESG native #mining company founded only 6 years ago, #FuraGems has always understood the importance of #communities to the success of our projects. Reuse and reclamation centers present massive opportunities for rural and remote communities and counties. Waste Hauling is inherently expesive. In Stevens County for example, MSW is hauled to Alexandria, MN and Gwinner, ND. Recycling is sent to Shakopee, MN. Our new compsting program sends residential and commercial compost to Hoffman, MN, our closest disposal location just 24 miles away from Morris. And getting rid of hazardous materials or unconventional waste? Some is collected by the local waste hauler, but most is included with MSW. That's why recover facilities like this one in Hubbard county, and the soon to be completed Douglas county facility will help alleviate a waste crisis that's occurring in rural MN. It will also provide reuse materials at low-no cost to the surrounding communities.
