Yesterday, we had the opportunity to attend the Critical Minerals Association Australia Roundtable on Critical Minerals Midstream in Australia at the #IMARC event in Sydney. The discussions centered on the crucial steps required to accelerate Australia’s capacity in processing and refining critical minerals domestically. This midstream focus is essential to bolster our national supply chain, ensure resource security, and position Australia as a key player in the global critical minerals market. The conversation highlighted several key challenges, including securing adequate financing, navigating regulatory approvals, optimising logistics, and achieving the necessary government support. We also discussed the vital aspects of building a resilient supply chain, enhancing productivity, and managing wage costs effectively. It’s clear that collaboration across industry, government, and financial stakeholders will be critical to overcoming these barriers. It is fantastic the Minister is building strong relationships with our strategic partners. As well as looking to Australia for critical minerals, the US is also absolutely desperate for our uranium; we could be a trusted supplier of uranium to the US; our closest strategic ally. Australia may or may not make the decision to build its own reactors. That’s an issue that the federal election will help clarify. But the rest of the world is certainly tripling down on its nuclear ambitions and needs huge amounts of uranium to fuel it. Uranium that we have. Lots of it. Just waiting to be exported. Now the US doesn’t yet technically designate uranium a critical mineral as they designate it an energy fuel. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t desperate for uranium supply from politically aligned nations. And it will be interesting to see if that classification changes in the near term as the Russian uranium ban comes into effect… We should act now to take up this exciting and profitable opportunity for Western Australia. And we would benefit by diversifying our economy too and ensuring our mining workforce maintains strong employment as other commodities such as nickel and iron ore have down times. Perhaps policy makers and union leaders should ask those workers whose jobs are under threat if they would prefer the uranium mining ban to continue or if they would be interested in working in the new growth industry to help deliver zero carbon energy to the world.

In Canada, phosphate meets the Federal Criteria outlined – both from a food security basis and the Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries for the EV and energy storage markets: Phosphate should be a Critical Mineral of Canada- and the Canadian farmer should have a secure domestic supply of phosphate fertilizer. Canada imports 100% of approximately 2 million tonnes of phosphate (as fertilizer) per annum, predominately from the United States. Yet US phosphate rock production and phosphoric acid production are declining, due to both rock quality and quantity.

Our Group Manager – ESG, Dr. Jennifer Hinton, presented at a United States House of Representatives roundtable in Washington D.C. The session, organised by the Critical Minerals Policy Working Group of the U.S. House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the U.S. and the Chinese Communist Party, focused on environmental stewardship, forced labor, sustainability, governance, and corruption in critical mineral production, including cobalt. This follows a presentation by Wayde Yeoman, Executive General Manager – Commercial, at the same committee earlier in the month. The roundtable discussion is part of ongoing efforts to develop legislative recommendations to support U.S. domestic production of critical minerals and mitigate Chinese market influence, including the proposed Resilient Resource Reserve aimed at stabilising cobalt prices. We continue to engage with the Congressional Committee and U.S. lawmakers with regard to next legislative steps.
