In fact, we can all think of an educator, preceptor, or partner who helped teach and role-model these skills. Because these behaviors reflect our training, they are also open to bias based on our different lived experiences. A little late but here it goes… Some months have passed since I shared time and space with brilliant individuals who are passionate about the work they get to do with children and youth at the annual Ontario Association of Child and Youth Care conference. During my presentation, I talked about the art and science of relationship building. As research suggests, providing evidence-based interventions to clients is a strong predictor of positive therapeutic outcomes. However, a positive prognosis cannot exist in the absence of a solid therapeutic relationship that is experienced as safe by a client. Through the intentional use of self, one then lays the groundwork for fertile soil that allows for growing and flourishing to occur. Likened to art, there are many ways one can go about the work. A work that requires authenticity. It requires presence. It requires creativity. It requires vulnerability. An opportunity to think outside the box and discover different ways of connecting with other humans. Truly, it is the best part of the work I get to do with youth and families.

Understanding child development is just one of the many protective factors that help families thrive. Sharing a great learning opportunity from ZERO TO THREE focused on the positive impact early relationships can have on #childdevelopment.

Did you know that 10% of children have experienced 3 or more adverse childhood experiences (ACEs)? This places them at high risk for poor health (including mental health) and socioeconomic outcomes across their lives. Reducing ACEs and boosting early child neurodevelopment is the most effective way to save future chronic healthcare costs and boost societal productivity. But the needed interventions are complex. I love this overview of the landscape by the Center for Community Resilience at The George Washington University- Milken Institute School of Public Health. Our global child development team is working on integrated solutions that prevent ACEs and build resilience through maximized neurodevelopment in early childhood.

Dr. Shed Boren, former LEAP board member, is graciously offering ACT therapy classes at our new reentry hub! With expertise in social work, healthcare, and advocacy, Dr. Boren's contributions have been invaluable in improving access to healthcare and social wellbeing for vulnerable populations in South Florida.
