I’m sharing this, and for multiple reasons. The first, and obvious reason is this: If you didn’t know that #GenCon is the largest table top gaming convention in North America - now you do! The people over at #GenCon want to make sure everyone who wants to be included is included and that they not only feel a sense of #belonging at the convention - they know they do #belong! They are truly amazing #humans! #Tangram has been honored to be their #charitypartner this year and to be working along side them in bringing #accessibility to the convention this year and in future years. Get your tickets August 1-4! The second, and maybe (maybe not to those who know me) less obvious reason, I am sharing this is for a more personal reason. As an executive leadership and transition coach who has worked with my own coach, one of the things I have really struggled with throughout my career has been speaking in front of cameras or more specifically, speaking about things publically that I am “supposed” to be an expert in. You know, what I do every day- the things I really do know like the back of my hand. Put a camera in front of me and my brain says ‘what’s your name again? How do you form words?’ I have made lots of jokes, mostly out of deflection, about this over the years, but this has really kept me from just doing it and growing. In fact, for years, I hid from presenting in this way! Last year, I decided to say yes. It started when my doctor asked me to meet with the FDA. Scary, but my answer was yes. Here’s what has changed. Hint - It isn’t that I suddenly became great at it. I decided that I am okay with the feedback. I can’t get better without it. If I totally bomb, well, what am I learning about myself and the situation? If I do really well - same questions. I am always learning and taking something away so that every time I am presenting I can tweak it and do better. I’m not where I want to be yet, but with each opportunity, I am growing closer.
