On Monday, the 108th edition of the Pulitzer Prizes was announced. In some ways, the winners and finalists were familiar: important investigations, incisive commentary, tremendous photography. But the list of honorees also highlighted three major ongoing shifts in American journalism: - The best works of journalism are increasingly produced by just a few high-end institutions. - The decline in local and regional newspapers has pushed online-native outlets to the forefront. - The work historically performed by newspapers is increasingly done by other forms of media. There are two ways to look at this broader shift at the highest levels of award-winning journalism. An optimist would look at the unprecedented excellence from online news outlets, especially at the local level, and see signs of tremendous hope. A pessimist would see the shrinking pool of finalist-worthy newspapers and rue the continuing spiraling of the newsrooms that are, in most communities, still the single largest producers of journalism. Bring daily local news to our community, free of charge. We recognized that although there are several news outlets serving our area, their focus is primarily on national news while ignoring hyper-focused local news. With this in mind, Thomas Hyslip started the Tega Cay Sun in June 2023. Launched as an online publication, a printed paper entered circulation starting in October 2023. The online version is updated daily while the monthly printed version is available in several locations throughout Tega Cay. Delivery to your door is also an option with home delivery.

For more information: www.mikelevinebook.com In a column about the importance of watchdog journalism, Mike Levine wrote “the newspapers for whom watchdog reporting is not a pedigree show for the Pulitzer, but a stubborn mutt’s insistence on holding a town board accountable.” Armed with a belief that journalism’s purpose is to tell the truth, challenge the powerful, and expose wrongdoing, I packed my bags to the middle-of-nowhere in Canada—Brandon, Manitoba, a town of 50,000 in the Canadian prairies for my first reporter job at a daily print newspaper. With the IRE training, I plan to investigate the local police force’s use of pedestrian stops. Brandon, like many rural Canadian towns, is surrounded by First Nations communities. Indigenous people are disproportionately overrepresented in the Canadian criminal justice system, and I see this on the local level in my daily reporting covering court. There’s also a running “joke” that I’ve heard from local Indigenous people and seem to play out when details come to light in court hearings—that if you’re Indigenous and riding a bike in Brandon, you’ll get stopped by the police. Since the local police do not formally collect race-based data, this investigation will involve significant work and careful methodology. I will use the investigative techniques I learn at the IRE conference to dig into the local police force’s use of pedestrian stops and whether these stops disproportionately affect Indigenous people. Why? Because I believe that I owe it to the community to try to find the truth. And maybe because I’m a stubborn mutt.

I recently posted an essay about the history of Journalism/Photojournalism. It covers many of the linear advancements of the field, as well as the basis of news and targeted audiences. Fun fact: For stories to be considered newsworthy, news must fall under a certain subset of values. Values such as Impact, Immediacy, Proximity, Prominence, Novelty, Conflict and Emotions all affect stories and audiences differently. Despite online-only news orgs having been eligible for 15 years now, newspapers dominated among Pulitzer Prize finalists—until 2024, when more online-native outlets were recognized than newspapers, writes Joshua Benton of Nieman Journalism Lab. How can bundling journalism from multiple publishers into a single offering drive subscription sales? In a freshly published open-access paper with Lukas Erbrich, Frank Lobigs (Institut für Journalistik (TU Dortmund)) and Christian-Mathias Wellbrock (Hamburg Media School), we delve into the effectiveness of such a “Spotify for News” approach in attracting consumers, even those who are usually hesitant to pay for digital journalism. Our study is based on a choice‐based conjoint analysis using empirical data from a representative survey of the German online population (𝑛 = 1,542).
