Korea to Invest Over $350 mn in iLED Technology According to Pulse by Maeil Business News Korea, The South Korean government will invest 484 billion won ($353.7 million) over an eight-year period to develop inorganic light-emitting diode technology and establish an ecosystem. The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced on Thursday that a project to develop and promote inorganic LED technology and its ecosystem passed the national research and development project evaluation committee’s preliminary feasibility study. Inorganic LEDs are self-emitting displays that use inorganic materials, such as LEDs, as the light source. They are emerging as the next-generation display after organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) thanks to their superiority in both brightness and power consumption. From a geographical perspective, Jiangsu continues its strong trend and ranks first in the investment amount rankings, which is more than the second to fourth combined. It has invested in as many as 9 projects. Guangxi, in second place, benefited from the implementation of a large project; Yunnan, in third place, has performed well in investment in lithium battery materials; Anhui, in fourth place, was 12.5 billion yuan; Hubei, in fifth place, was 9.33 billion yuan; sixth place Sichuan is 8 billion yuan; seventh is Zhejiang with 6.43 billion yuan; eighth is Guizhou with 5.664 billion yuan; ninth is Jiangxi with 4 billion yuan; 10th is Shandong with 2.37 billion yuan; 11th is Guangdong with 1.2 billion yuan; 12th is Tianjin is 1.114 billion yuan; Xinjiang, the 13th place, is 90 million yuan. India and the United States want to strengthen their trade relations and their technological and industrial cooperation, according to a White House statement. This was agreed at a meeting between the security advisors of both countries, Jake Sullivan and Ajit Doval, in New Delhi. Existing cooperation in strategic sectors such as #space, #semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and clean energy will be continued, with plans including corporate partnerships and government funding for research. In the raw materials sector, joint investments in a lithium project in South America and a rare earth deposit in Africa are planned, as well as an imminent bilateral agreement on critical minerals such as graphite, #gallium, and #germanium. #rawmaterials

GCL to build the largest polysilicon plant outside of China ON JUNE 3, 2024 BY ALANPATRICKRYAN GCL Technology will build the largest polysilicon production facility outside China in the Middle East, through a joint collaboration with Mubadala Investment Company which is a the UAE’s sovereign investment company. According to GCL: “This strategic move aims to localize an integrated silicon ecosystem in the UAE, with potential to impact the global polysilicon industry and contribute to Abu Dhabi’s economic diversification and job creation” In 2022 Emirates Global Aluminium said it would build a solar-power silicon metal smelter; the UAE has a domestic demand for around 60,000 mtpy most of which comes from China.

The World Trade Organisation has called for more transparency in China’s industrial subsidy programme, particularly with respect to #steel, semiconductors and electric vehicles in its latest WTO review. These export industries in China have been able ‘to benefit from a range of competitive advantages, from low energy prices to cheap loans and land’ reports The Times, (see article in Friday July 19th edition, by Richard Spencer, pg 35).
