Category exclusivity is a key attribute of any premium sponsorship. This is why the FIFA Club World Cup announcement using stadia sponsors' names caught me by surprise. This is new to FIFA standards (hiding naming rights has been a requirement of bid books for decades) and sets a precedent for all future events. While current and potential sponsors might not love the idea, it does make commercial sense, if negotiated ahead of time. After all, keeping existing signage (of the naming rights partner) can save millions of dollars in operational costs for host cities. It will be interesting to see what FIFA will do FIFA World Cup 2026™ - Canada, Mexico and the United States.
