US and international political and policy forecasting for financial markets and investors that’s independent, unaffiliated, expert, and actionable
May 31: Here's the easily accessed first TV hit today on Trump's conviction for markets, and why Trump's campaign just took a hit. Surveillance's take: " Trump’s efforts to woo independent voters and supporters of former rival Nikki Haley get harder with felony verdicts against him, especially given his penchant for red-hot rhetoric, according to Pangaea Policy’s Terry Haines. “But I don’t think it’s a seismic negative for Trump’s candidacy or a significant bump for Biden.” "The time lag until the voting is only one reason that it’s hard to say how the historic court action will shape opinions on Nov. 5, Haines... said. Another variable is how the two campaigns themselves use the New York courtroom action.... "Haines had a take on Trump’s Wall Street support at odds with some of the immediate headlines about financial titans — think Howard Lutnick and Stephen Schwarzman — sticking with the Republican nominee. “They’re private or able to do what they do without caring about blowback,” Haines said. “On the other hand if you’re looking at the average Fortune 500 CEO or C-suite person who has to answer to shareholders, they will be awfully circumspect about how they put themselves out there, or if they put themselves out there at all. They don’t want to risk public blowback from supporting Trump.” Many thanks to the Bloomberg TV Surveillance team for having me on. How in the world did Biden and his advisers allow such a disastrous debate to happen?! One answer is confirmation bias, which is the tendency to look for evidence that validates our beliefs. Everyone does it. Biden and his closest advisers, family and friends want him to be cogent enough to effectively run for President. They see his best moments as validation. The President, however, needs to be sharp all the time. If we want to accurately understand reality, we must seek out disconfirming evidence. We need to take it seriously, even when (especially when!) it’s telling us things we don’t want to hear! At Patient Capital, we study behavior, and behavioral biases. This knowledge helps us understand the world, people and even ourselves. It can help us mitigate our sometimes flawed instincts and be more effective. In investing, it’s essential. Politics too.

It's the election, stupid The post mortem on last week's moves continues with investors choosing any narrative that suits their priors: ◾ Recession fears ◾ Yen carry unwind ◾ Short vol, dispersion/correlation trades ◾ AI monetisation concerns Geopolitics gets a mention in passing but maybe it deserves more thought? Trump's average betting odds on Real Clear Politics have fallen to 48 (from a 66.2 high in mid-July) Quant Insight have added RCP's Trump betting odds as an additional variable in our macro factor models. On our tactical Short Term model, the S&P500's sensitivity to this factor has exploded higher. It is now the second biggest positive driver of $SPX ▶ the most recent pattern suggests equities have developed a significant bias to a Trump win. Breaking that down by sector we see a heavy tech skew - Tech $XLK, Consumer Discretionary XLY, Communications XLC are the ones with the biggest Trump bias. But also Real Estate $IYR. The Trump-Harris debates were always going to be a big deal. Potentially even more so now. And tmrw we get Elon Musk interviewing Trump on X...
